First a little background on John McLaughlin. According to the _Harmony
Illustrated Encyclopedia of Jazz_ (HIEJ), John was born in Yorkshire, England
on January 4, 1942. His family was musical and hearing the blues of Muddy
Waters, Leadbelly, etc. influenced him to teach himself the guitar. HIEJ
says that "in the '60s, McLaughlin contributed to the British blues revival
with Alexis Korner ...". I have been unable to determine if any of Korner's
released albums include John.
A few eulogies that I could easily lay my hands on:
In a review of the Mahavishnu concert performance at The Ritz, New York
City, _down beat_ (December, 1986, page 61) said "Mahavishnu, on the other
hand [compared to Weather Update which was on the same bill], is smokin' so
hard now it's frightening. ... McLaughlin remains ammazing. No other
guitarist around ... plays with such pure passion and sheer conviction."
In _down beat's_ blindfold test of Pat Metheny (Feb., 1981, page 47) they
play Pat the song "Friendship" from the album _Johnny McLaughlin, Electric
Guitarist_. Pat identifies Carlos & John and says, "McLaughlin to me is the
most influential voice in the last decade on the guitar, without a doubt.
In a way, he's been misrepresented by his imitators; so many people have
jumped on his bandwagon that we sometimes forget what an amazing contribu-
tion he made. He really turned things around; there's hardly a young player
around that doesn't play like him. ... But the missing element is his
incredible soulful feeling. It's more than the notes, more than he's the
fastest gun . . . it's that he's an incredibly dynamic, strong person-
ality on his instrument..."
In the Sept., 1988 _down beat_ interview with Chick Corea by Joesf Woodward,
Joesf says (page 19), "There is this general view ... that ... Miles [Davis]
crystallized electric jazz fusion and that he sent his emmissaries out."
Chick responds, "Nah, that's Disneyland. Miles is definitely a leader ...
But there were other things that occurred that I thought were equally as
important. What John McLaughlin did with the electric guitar set the world
on its ear. No one ever heard an electric guitar played like that before,
and it certainly inspired me. ... John's band, more than my experience with
Miles, led me to want to turn the volume up and write music that was more
dramatic and made your hair move."
HIEJ completes it's entry on John with a discussion of his mid-80's
activities and the opinion: " - the guitar mastery of John McLaughlin
still takes the breath away."
In my humble opinion, John is one one those few consummate musicians. He's in
the same league as John Coltrane (on saxophone) and Ravi Shankar (on sitar) and
I mean on both acoustic and electric guitars (and on guitar synthesizer too for
that matter).
Explanations & Notes:
--------------------
I have tried to order the albums by their release dates. Where this date is
uncertain I put a ? after it or show it spanning two years. If I'm unsure if
John was on the album listed, I but a (?) after the album title. The format of
the album entries is:
artist/group - album title (release date)
Lp and CD album labels & numbers and countries of issue (I include the
CD SPARS code when known (probably AAD if not given)
musician credits. recording location and date(s) (US format).
production credits.
a numbered list of the songs that John PLAYED ON in the order they
appeared on the album with timings (US format).
a list of my sources of information
Not all entries are complete of course.

musician credits in a compact format. It is a bit error prone
and doesn't cover jazz-rock (e.g., Miles Davis) very well.

The MEDIA (ALBUMS, VIDEOS, MOVIES, etc.)
-----------------------------------------
First some possibilities for which I have scant information:
The liner notes (written by James Isaacs) in the CD release of _Emergency!_
mentions that John "played on recording sessions for Petula Clark, Tom Jones
and Engelbert Humperdinck, which McLaughlin found so onerous that he bolted
for Germany to make free music with multi-instrumentalist Gunther Hampel".
Which singles & albums resulted from these sessions are not identified.
Note that Mr. Isaacs also states in these notes that Dave Holland was the
bassist on _Extrapolation_ whereas the Lp and the CD say it was Brian Odges
so I'm not sure I believe everything he says in these notes.
Also, the May 1991 issue of _downbeat_ (Volume 58, #5) on page 17 states
that in the '50's and '60's John giged with these artists: Big Pete
Deuchar and his Professors of Ragtime, Eric Clapton, and Mick Jagger.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John produced the Katia and Marielle Labeque album _Love of Colors_ (CD: Sony
SK 47227; 1991) of jazz piano/synthesizer duets. They play four McLaughlin
compostions: "Florianapolis", "Three Willows", "Girls with Red Shoes" and
"When Love Is Far Away". The last three of these were previously unrecorded.
John also arranged or coarranged five other songs on the album.
The May 1991 issue of _downbeat_ (Volume 58, #5), pg 18, states that John's
second guitar concerto, "Europa" was performed in Paris last February.
Hopefully, we will be graced with a recording of it someday.
I also have a bootleg album of the first Mahavishnu Orchestra on the label
Phonygraf. It has two cuts: "Dance of the Maya" - (19:00) and "Intro. Jam" -
(28:00).
Another bootleg is Jimi Hendrix - _The Master's Masters_ on CD (Rockin' Records
JH-01). It's first track is titled "Jimi Hendrix/John McLaughlin Jam" and
clocks in at (5:01). This is apparently the only cut with JM, though the CD
does not really say one way or the other. The back of the CD cardboard jacket
says "All recordings taken directly from the studio masters." I would guess
that it was recorded in late 1969 or early 1970. Jimi's playing at the Atlanta
Pop Festival in the Spring or Summer of 1970 (as documented in the home video
release _Johnny B. Goode_) demonstrates a strong McLaughlin influence in my
opinion. At least I've never heard or seen Jimi make such fast, clean runs
before.
Tom Loden (LO...@ll.mit.edu) writes that the abridged version of the book _Jimi
Hendrix: A Discography_ by Ken Matesich and Dave Armstrong list a Hendrix
bootleg Lp _Electric Lady Jams_ with one cut, "Jam (Killing Floor)" with JM.
Recorded 3/12/69 at the Record Plant in New York City, it has Jimi & John on
guitars, Dave Holland - bass, and probably Buddy Miles on drums. The Lp label
& catalog number are Sure Nice Shoes 714 issued in 1974 (83?).
Brad Anders (br...@cup.portal.com) writes that the original Mahavishnu Orchestra
performed on a "Don Kirschner's Rock Concert" television broadcast in the
'70's. He says that it was recorded after _Between Nothingness and Eternity_
(which would mean in 1973 or 1974) and that they played two songs, the second
one being "Sister Andrea". Brad goes on to say that he has an album _Mar Y
Sol_ from a concert in Puerto Rico that includes "Noonward Race" performed by
the original Mahavishnu Orchestra. He doesn't provide any other information
about this album so I'm not even sure if it was a legitimate release or a
bootleg.
JM was the producer for for an album of Scott Joplin's music with Katia &
Marielle LaBeque on pianos. The album is called _Gladrags_. It was recorded
in Sept., 1982 and has a cover by Hipgnosis. The US CD release is Angel/EMI
CDC-7 47093 2.
In Oct. or Nov., 1985, JM was a guest on the Tonight Show. He played
"Cherokee" on acoustic guitar, backed by the band, and Johnny Carson briefly
interviewed him. Carson announced that JM would be perfoming his original
composition, "Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra" at The Dorothy Chandler
Pavillion (presumably in Los Angeles, California) on 11/27 & 29/85. JM also
talked about how he was getting divorced from his wife (though her name
wasn't mentioned) the next day.
