How about "CHEROKEE" by Ray Nobles?...I thought that one smoked..not only
because of Tempo De Terrass..but also the execellent Phrasing & perfect
clarity of even the most diffucult 16th/note passage. It may not be the
"FASTEST" but 'cept for some runs by the great pianist Ahmad Jamal..I havent
heard too many uptempo compositions that can BLOW Ray's version of this
wonderful song out of the race!....
*CHEROKEE*
Sweet Indian Maiden...Since first I met you...I can't forget you....
Cherokee Sweet___Heart!....
Child of the Prarie..Your love keeps calling...My heart enthralling..

I don't know about the fastest recorded jazz tune, but without a doubt the
fastest jazz album is John Zorn's Spy vs. Spy. If you're not familiar with it,
it's basically Ornette Coleman tunes played at breakneck speed.

200-300? Any competent bopper can play 260 in
his or her sleep. You have to be cruising
above 300 bpm to *really* be playing fast.

Check out Freddie Hubbard's version of Cole Porter's "Just One of Those
Things" from his album "The Hub of Hubbard" on the MPS label, catalog No.
825 956-2. To the best of my ability to clock it it seems to be in the
quarter = 400 range (it's so fast it's hard to actually get an accurate
resolution!!). It's the fastest track I've ever heard - there is also an
interesting story behind it which I got from Freddie himself when I was
lucky enough to have lunch with him once! Email me if you want to find
out about it!

I know that Art Tatum was probably the fastest pianist there was. He has a
version of "Cherokee" that has been clocked at above quarter=400. I can't
remember the exact speed, but I know this for a fact.

I agree too. This performance is the fastest one I have ever heard.
Richard Davis and others except Freddie cannot follow the tempo.
What is the story behind it, Bob?

A local musician here often counts off tunes fairly quickly; when you ask him
"is that the quarter note or the half note", he answers, "that's the *page*!"

I've never heard a faster tempo than Victor Feldman version of "Bebop":
