Is anyone familiar with this record? Any comments on material,
delivery, chemistry? Marsh and Christlieb complement each other very
effectively on the Conversations albums. Also, the quality of the CDs
is superb.

Pete Christlieb/Warne Marsh Quintet - "Apogee" (Warner Bros BSK-3236)
Christleib, Marsh (ts), Lou Levy (p), Jim Hughart (b), Nick Ceroli (d)
Magna-tism (Christlieb)
317 East 32nd (Tristano)
Rapunzel (Becker-Fagen)
Tenors of the Time (Roccisano)
Donna Lee (Parker)
I'm Old Fashioned (Kern-Mercer)
Released in 1978, reportedly this Becker-Fagen production was part of
the deal Steely Dan made when they signed with Warner Brothers. The
band broke up before ever delivering any Steely Dan music to WB, but
this did get out. It's a wonderful album, every bit as good as the two
Criss Cross albums which came out later. "Rapunzel", based on the
changes to Burt Bacharach's "In the Land of Make Believe", is a
delight! Not on CD, but still pretty easy to find on vinyl.

It's a great record. Much of the tunes are transcribed Marsh and/or
Christlieb solos which were harmonized for 2 tenors, and I believe the
arrangements were done by a very talented composer/alto saxophonist,
Joe Rocasano. There's even a song written by Fagan and Becker which
is very good; nice changes and melody.
I remember asking Pete several years ago what it was like being in
the studio with Becker/Fagan. He replied that they were very easy to
work with; they just stayed in the booth and played with the knobs
leaving the music to the band.
Lou Levy also plays some good piano on the session. It's called
"Apogee."

That's Joe Roccisano whose new ECD should be out soon. Check the website at

Joe died suddenly last November and we miss him like crazy. Great
arranger/composer who also played some mean alto and soprano saxophone.
