In another thread about jazz cello, someone mentioned cellist
Abdul Wadud's great playing on Julius Hemphill's albums and that
made me think about all the *great* musicians who came out of
St. Louis and Chicago in the 1970s.

My favorite has always been the trombone player and
composer Joseph Bowie, Lester Bowie's brother, who gets
my vote for *the* jazz trombone player of all time. In the
late 70s he started a band called Defunkt which was
phenomenal, a funk band with serious, serious chops,
and lyrics of an intelligence you'd don't hear very
often.

Well, the Internet proves its worth again. I just
discovered that Joseph Bowie has a web site:

http://www.fred.net/jbowie/home.html

It'll bring you up to date on all the things he's
been into in the last few years. Defunkt is thriving in
Europe and Japan and he's aiming it back here. Check it out.
One of the great bands of our times.
