KJAZ (92.7MHz FM), a commercial 24-hour jazz radio station in San
Francisco and Alameda, California, has been serving the jazz community
for the past 35 years. Today it is THE ONLY 24-hour all jazz radio
station IN THE NATION. Right now KJAZ is facing a financial
difficulities. The 92.7MHz frequency will be sold and the station
will no longer exist if sufficient fund is not raised by next week.

Please help preserve a tradition. Please help save KJAZ by joining
the "Friends of KJAZ 92.7" club. By paying $92.70 now and another
$92.70 in January 1995, you'll receive four issues of the quarterly
KJAZ newsletter, a KJAZ window sticker, discounts on ticket prices to
various jazz events as well as other beneficts to be described later.

Time is running short. There is less than a week left before KJAZ is
forced to shutdown. Please call 1-800-359-6447 and have your credit
card ready.

If the goal of raising $3.0 million by next week and another $1.7
million in contracts by 1/95 cannot be met, your membership fee will
be 100% refunded. Until the goal is reached, all proceeds from the
sales of memberships will be deposited into a separate bank account
that will NOT be drawn on unless KJAZ are assured the station will not
have to be sold.

Note: KJAZ is a commercial station, not a public station. Hence KJAZ
can neither solicit nor accept donation.

*********************************************************************
To those who are ready to flame me for running ad's across the net,
please let me clarify that I am NOT affiliated to KJAZ (except that
I've already called the 800 number to become a member of the "Friends
of KJAZ 92.7" club.) Neither am I employed by KJAZ, nor do I invest
in the radio station. I just feel that, as a fan of KJAZ, I should
help spread the news as much as possible.

Thank you very much!

Hardly. Perhaps, though, the only commercial (ie, non-public) one.

Yes, and with all do respect to KJAZ, which I will sorely miss, radio
station KLON-FM is not only 24-hours, but is available on satellite all
across North America and parts of Europe too. (Galaxy 5) in fact, if you
want KLON in your town, get your cable company to request a feed. KLON
offers if for free. They have an e-mail address:

thom...@csulb.edu

Sometime this summer they will be online with a WEB destination.

Again, with all due respect, no nationally-broadcast station can replace
a local Jazz station. A local station publicizes and sponsors events
and concerts in the community, including fundraisers (sometimes for ailing
musicians). Its DJs become special figures in the commmunity, spokespeople
for jazz, and promoters of local artists. KJAZ is great.
I lived in New York City at the time that station WRVR changed its
format. We took it for granted that NYC could support a jazz station.
And then one day, at noon I think, a jazz ballad finished and a country
song began. A cold day. The country format didn't last, but jazz didn't

I just spent a week in LA, and listened to KLON quite a bit. A very
enjoyable station, from what I heard. They play "straight ahead jazz",
which seems to mean they stick to traditional stuff and stay away from
fusion and other modern off-shoots.

That's as may be, but it begs the question "why should anyone outside the
Bay area care about KJAZ?" I'm sure it's a fine station, even worth
saving, but the appeals do seem to misrepresent the situation.
