Astrud Gilberto I've heard of but Elis Regina is new to me. Has she
done a lot of recordings? I would appreciate any feedback. Also very
helpful would be where I could purchase her records or tapes or CDs.
Thanks.

There are two more of Elis Regina's albums that I have in my
collection. One is called "essa mulher" (that woman) and the other is
simply called "Elis" and in it she interprets the music of Milton
Nascimento, Joao Bosco, Tom Jobim, and Belchior.
Unfortunately Elis Regina died on January 19, 1982 when she was only
36 years old. Jobim recalled that she was never into drugs, and
did'nt even drink, and yet the autopsy revealed that she had died as a
result of both cocaine and alcohol in her system. Jobim wrote that she
was one of the greatest singers of all time, and in Brazil they called
her "Furacao", the "hurricane" to celebrate her boundless energy.
Elis was huge in Brazil, and her stuff is not all that hard to find even
in the US. She was a much more accomplished musician than Astrud, not
even in the same league. The collaborations with Jobim are probably the
place to start. You might look in the Jobim bins.
Yes. Compare Astrud to Elis is simply unfair (nothing against Astrud),
but Elis is the best we have in Brazil...

Elis Regina is the original. Her voicing, phrasing and articulation are
as central to modern female Brazilian vocals as Parker was to the sax.
What a gifted musician!!
