My personal faves are "Eventyr", "Paths, Prints", "Its OK to Listen...",
but I think perhaps a very useful CD "best" for a newcomer might
be "Twelve Moons", which has a fairly wide stylistic range that
almost seems like a summation of much of his work and is
a full CD worth of sonically and musically fine music.

Twelve Moons is good, and I like the others you mention too. I'm also fond
of 'Dis' with Ralph Towner, and I love the title track on the
Gismonti/Haden collaboration "Folk Songs". I would say that "I took up the
Runes" is quite similar to Twelve Moons.

Garbarek's work with Keith Jarrett is also worth checking out. I
particularly like his playing on "Personal Mountains".

Well, while we are talking about Garbarek's works with Keith Jarrett, i recommend strongly
the album "The survivor suite" . It's quite surprising but after a while,
i think it's perhaps better (and more original) than personal mountains (which is a wonderful
album too...).

I just listened to this album a few days ago for the first time in at least
five years, and I had forgotten how great it was. Maybe it should be
nominated as one of Dewey Redman's finest performances with Keith Jarrett.
Garbarek doesn't play on it

On the subject of Dewey Redman, what do people think of "Eyes of the
Heart"? What a strange album - apparently (according to the Ian Carr
biography) the group were waiting and waiting for Redman to come on and
play, and he just didn't. You can hear Jarrett desparately marking time,
and the palpable sense of relief in the audience when the sax comes
in........

Very odd.

You know, this is the one I ended up buying in addition to
Twelve Moons. I've already memorized "My Song" - what an
unbelievably beautiful melody....Garbarek's soprano tone
is the best I've ever heard.

I've listened to this album for 5 nights in a row now. Thanks.

Garbarek has lots of great albums (I have 20 CDs that list his name first)
and all the recommendations I've seen so far are all excellent but my
favorite is:

Jan Garbarek - Bobo Stenson Quartet - _Witchi-Tai-To_

Though Garbarek's _Dis_, _All Those Born with Wings_ and _Twelve Moons_ are
all close runner-ups.

I also give 5 stars (out of 5) to Zakir Hussain's _Making Music_ with John
McLaughlin on acoustic guitar and Hariprasd (sp?) Chaurasia on flute. Though
Garbarek is not on every track, the music making on this album is incredible!

Enjoy.

In spite of its simplicity and lack of improvisation I Pick Up the Runes
is perhaps my favorite with Listen to the Grey Voice next. The only
Gabarek album I have that I don't like is the one he plays all the
instruments on (I forget the name of this one).

Some of my favortie Jan Garbarek recordings are with Keith Jarret, My Song
& Belonging and the Charlie Haden albums, Magico and Folk Songs.

The two Solstice quartet albums that might be found under Ralph
Towner's name. The two trio albums with Egberto Gismonti and
Charlie Haden. That's four; I can't narrow it down any further.

I always thought that _Magico_ and _Folk Songs_ were Egberto Gismonti albums.
Wasn't Garbarek on Gismonti's _Sol Dio Meia_ album, too?

"Esoteric Circle" by the Garbarek Quartet (w/ Terje Rypdal) is an
excellent CD. It was recorded in the late 60s, and is one of those CDs
you have to listen to all the way through once it starts playing. Another
early Garbarek that is quite interesting is "Afric Pepperbird" (1970),
also with Rypdal. The "Sart" CD is another good one (1971) - quite avant
garde for its time.
