I was just digging through my obscure portion of my jazz collection and came
across an old tape of a trumpet player named Roy Roman. I'm pretty sure this
was a joke album - - he does a cover of "Isn't She Lovely", "Autumn", and
"Birdland". . . and sounds a LOT like a drunken Cat Anderson/Maynard Ferguson on
a really bad intonation night. . . so I blew it off as a joke.
Then, I found him listed as lead trumpet for Lionel Hampton's Big Band on the
"Outrageous" CD (Timeless), and on the "Ambassador At Large" CD/Album from some
of his (Hapton's) 1970's European Tours.
Any help out there?
Thanks,
Chuck Naffier

Roy was around NYCity for many years in the late 70's and 80's .He is
not in the recent Musician's union book. Roy was a real powerhouse.

No, I think he's serious, just tasteless. I've heard the "Isn't
She Lovely" recording too - I think Scott Gordon played it for me
when he lived around here. Seems to me he said someone told him that
Roy was the guy who runs the "Double High C In 37 Weeks!" ads in Down
Beat.

I wonder if that is the same guy that one of the trumpet professors
at Urbana did a report on. He said his book was along the lines of
"If you have any gigs, cancel them! The gigs will interfere with
my method! Don't practice any other material, only practice what is in
my book. Do them ever other day. Don't playing anything on the day of
rest".
The professor actually tried this out for awhile in the summer,
and his range improved, but at the expense of a lot of other things.

Thanks for responding to this - - I was beginning to think I was the only one
who had ever heard this stuff. . . though it probably won't be gracing my
speakers anytime soon again!
Thanks again,

Yeah Marc, I played it for you (what a friend!). Not sure of the 37 weeks
thing, although a friend of mine bought one of his instructional videos.
I remember that his warmup consisted of mainly screaching at low volume,
and pedal tones. There was a version of "Tenderly" that rivaled
"Isn't She Lovely".
: Don't playing anything on the day of rest".
On the video there is a testimonial by a well-known player (rats, can't
remember who), praising Roman for helping his trumpet technique, as well
as helping him find Jesus. He seemed sincere.
The "Isn't She Lovely" recording is one of the treasures in my collection.
