In article <1115975238.7...@o13g2000cwo.googlegroups.com>,

If you've never heard Miles' voice, you may be interested in an interview
archived at the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society (producers of the
Vancouver Internation Jazz Festival) site:
http://www.coastaljazz.ca/index.php?page_id=83

The background is that Miles was due to play in Vancouver at the end of
October 1983 and John Orysik (another DJ at Coop radio and one of the
jazz society founders) had set up an interview with John Scofield, the
guitarist in the band at that time. At the
last minute (Orysik was already on the air), the agent called and said
Scofield couldn't make it but would he like to speak to Miles?

John started scrambling to put a tape on while the agent handed the phone
to Miles and you can hear the rest.

By the way, also on that site
(http://www.coastaljazz.ca/index.php?page_id=83&history=1)
is a page that gives some of the history of the jazz festival
(celebrating its 20th anniversary this year) and coop radio's role in
starting it. There are some historical pictures on that page including
an unpublished photo of the famous onstage encounter between Miles and
Wynton Marsalis at the first jazz festival in 1986 taken by Chris Cameron
who's been an official festival photographer for most of the last 20 years.
There's actually a whole series of photos of that encounter that are
framed in the office but I guess the rest will have to wait for another
day.

Fascinating! I'm listening to it now. The audio quality isn't very
good, but his voice is clear enough.

Thanks,

It really is interesting. What struck me as I listened to it was what
a "normal" interview it was. Miles seemed pleasant and friendly.
Sometimes, we get so caught up in the legend of someone like Miles, so
stuck on stories of his eccentricities, that we forget that he could
have simple, normal, not all that peculiar conversations talking about
his music, his tours, and such.

Miles had really mellowed out towards the end, although he had a few
years left in '83.
