hey everyone,

i remember having a cassette a years ago of an album called Jazz at the Opera
House. Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, and several other people
on it. it was a tribute to someone, who's name i don't remember. Some tunes on
it were a solo tenor sax "Round Midnight", then several different combinations
of musicians playing "wildflower" , "footprints", i believe "stolen moments"
and maybe 5 other tunes.

does anyone know if this album is available on CD? or if it's still in print?
thanks for your help
james

It was dedicated to the man who produced the concert (as kind of a
going away present for himself) and died of cancer shortly afterwards,
the writer Conrad Silvert. It's not available on CD. Some folks
consider this album to contain the finest recorded performances of
Wynton Marsalis.

Yes, and the collective personnel is Denny Zeitlen (duet with Herbie
Hancock), Toshiko Akiyoshi (solo pinao),
Toshiko and Lew Tabackin (duet), Bobby Hutcherson (duet with Herbie), then a
quintet of Wynton Marsalis, Herbie, Charlie Haden, and Tony Williams for the
bulk of it. Bobby sits in on one of the quintet numbers, and it ends with a
duet with Wayne and Herbie on Round Midnight.

He is not credited on the album, but Jaco Pastorius is in the picture of the
group and plays a few chorus at
the end of Footprints.

I have never seen it on CD but I bought it when it came out (on vinyl) . I
agree it is very fine and listened to it a lot when it came out. (I just
pulled it out and put it on !)

This was issued on Columbia and is just the type of thing they would issue
on CD in only Japan.
