In his autobiography, Miles claims that he wrote "Donna Lee" and that credit
was mistakenly given to Bird on the record sleeve. But a bass player friend
of mine recently told me that Donna Lee was composed by Bird from one of
his solos. According to this account, Bird liked his solo so much (the name
of the tune escapes me at the moment) that he turned it into a tune.

Anybody know anything about this??

A biography by Paul Chambers (not the bass player) on Miles Davis
said that Miles Davis wrote "Donna Lee", but the song was accredited to
Charlie Parker because of some contract problem or distribution of
royalties. Unfortunately, I do not remember the exact details.

OUOTES:
"A lot of guys played fast. Rapid! But they didn't
play the notes that Charlie Parker played... Bird
has some notes in his melodies, the lines that he
wrote, that are deep notes... deep as anything
Beethoven ever wrote."
-Dizzy Gillespie

"Life is a wisp and I like it crisp, crystal, and
refreshing to the point, instantaneously revealing
all there is away with pretension, just see intent-
ion and the music of life is yours."
-Chick Corea

"A musician, if he's a messenger, is like a child
who hasn't been handled too many times by man, hasn't
had to many fingerprints across his brain. That's
why music is so much heavier than anything you ever
felt."
-Jimi Hendrix

I also heard that Miles wrote this tune. Source was James Newton.

He was adamant.

Anyone else?

Anyone else think the answer to this should become a FAQ, along with the
CHARLIE BROWN/Vince Guraldi?
