A friend if mine wants to know where the tune "While My Lady Sleeps" comes from--is
it based on a classical theme? We know that Bronislau Kaper wrote it.
We also wanted to know if anybody can tell us of recorded examples in the Jazz and/or
Vocal genre.

I have noticed that the tune is quoted quite freely in many jazz players solos.

Thanks,
Mark

On the Riverside CD of Chet Baker vocals "It Could Happen To You"
his recording of "While My Lady Sleeps" is included as a bonus. If
you like his singing (I do) it's quite beautiful.

It was sung by Nelson Eddy in the 1941 movie "The Chocolate Soldier".
Music by Bronislaw Kaper, lyrics by Gus Kahn.

Guitarist Chuck Wayne's 1953 Savoy album "Jazz Guitarist", has this song
on it. The album is available on CD and has Zoot Zims, Brew Moore, George
Duvivier, Ed Shaughnessy and Harvey Leonard on it. Good tune.

I'm pretty sure that Coltrane recorded it on one of his Prestige LP's,
which were recorded between '57 or so and '62 or so. I think it was
one of the ones with Red Garland on piano. These have been reissued
on CD.
