I just got an odd Cecil Taylor lp from Cadence. It's called
"Broadcasts" on J for Jazz (JFJ801) and looks like a bootleg
(grainy xeroxed picture on sleeve, superficial typewritten notes by
Harris N. Venuti). The cuts are side 1: Mirage, Tangent, side 2:
Afro-Rosette. The sound is distractingly bad, recording levels
really low. It's a solo performance, lots of thick shimmering
incredibly fast cluster work, a little like Silent Tongues but
not as well-constructed. No further information is available
on the sleeve (the notes mention Coltrane in the mid '60s).
I'm guessing that this is from the late '60s or early '70s, a
period of Cecil's work that I'm not familiar with at all (all
my Cecil lps are from the early '60s or after '79, except Silent
Tongues). Does anyone know anything about "Broadcasts"? (Cadence
also lists Ornette and Phil Woods "Broadcasts" lps.)
