Does anyone have any experience with the old Bill Evans and Tony
Bennett CD?

I have the CD and feel that the pairing of these two greats did not work.
Mr. Bennett, it seems, was oblivious to the subtle complexities of Evans.

Check out Evans and Toots Thielemann on their album entitled "Affinity"
Now here's an interesting pairing and a delightful listen each time you
play it.

Good Listening everyone!

Bill Evans. Tony Bennett. What else do you need to know? Buy it.

Umm... Mr. Lad, sir, I know you're new here and all, and probabally
still a bit peeved at us for recommending John Zorn as a viable
Kenny G alternative, BUT... this album was recorded June 10-13
1975. A few weeks after I was born. Last time I checked, I wasn't
crumbling to dust.

The album was remastered for CD release in 1990. The sound is
excellent. The music has been spoken for. Enjoy the album.

Actually there are two Bennett/Evans albums, both recorded in the
early 70's, probably in some kind of reciprocal deal between the two
labels they recorded for. The more well known is on Fantasy, and the
lesser known was originally on the Improv label, and was most recently
available on DRG.
I know these albums are held in high regard by many, but I've always
found Bennett to be annoyingly hoarse-sounding on them, but then that's
just my opinion!
I wouldn't consider a recording from the early 70's to be ancient! I
doubt that there would be anyone who would find these to be
archaic-sounding! (Except maybe a hip-hop fan)

There are two recordings by Bill Evans and Tony Bennett. The older one is
"The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album". The other one is "Together Again".
In my opinion there are very strong songs on both and other songs that
don't move me as much. My favourite cuts from the first are "The Touch Of
Your Lips" and "When In Rome", on the second "You Must Believe In Spring"
is outstanding.

I have Tony Bennett: The Rodgers and Hart Songbook with the Ruby Braff/
Gearge Barnes Quartet. It was originally on Improv, now released as a DRG cd.
It's clearly been taped off of an old LP, and not a pristine copy either.
I don't know if this is typical of DRG releases or unique to this one.
I don't mind the LP surface noise because the album is so wonderful,
probably my favorite Tony.

I have only the second ("Together Again"), but have heard some cuts from the
first on the radio, and get the feeling it is probably stronger overall. "You
Must Believe In Spring" is really only the strong track on the second one. It
is, however, in my list of top two or three jazz vocal ballad performances of
all time, along with Kellye Gray's version of "Good Morning Heartache" from
"Standards (In Gray)" and maybe a Chet Baker song from "Let's Get Lost", but I
haven't heard that one in a while.

i was listening to that on CD today....the recording is more than
fine...it is an exceptional album...I believe on Riverside - the
executive producer was Orrin Keepnews - it was produced by a woman
whose name escapes me right now (the cd is at work)....

i also say: what else do you need to know? buy it....totally worth it

I concur with most of the previous opinions already expressed about this
album. Not a bad recording for fans of Evans and Bennett, but they each
have done better work. The album sounded flat to me on first listen, but
I grew to like it. I think that Evans was really restraining himself to
act as an accompanist, while Bennett is pleasant, but not exactly on
fire. If you're an Evans fan I would pick this up, but expect to
have to listen to it a few times before it warms. If you're a Bennett
fan I think you can find better. FWIW, it beats the heck out of that
Coltrane/Hartman duo, and this coming from a die-hard Coltrane fan!

Regards,
David in Ithaca

It was on Fantasy, actually, and the producer was the late Helen Keane.

Gawd! I was around in the 70s. Am I ancient?

I am a huge Bill Evans fan, and had never paid attention to Tony Bennett.
This (the first one on fantasy) is one of the greatest CDs I own. The
sound is great. Think of it this way: A rare treat to hear Evans
accompanying a singer... an art in itself. A rare chance to hear Bennett
in all his raw expression, without horns, grand arrangement, etc It took
guts form TB to put himself in this setting.

Helen Keane was the producer. In one of the music mags ( I can't remember,
probably Musician or MIX) famous producers were asked to name the most
well produced records of all time. Don Was put this at the top of his
list.

I couldn't disagree more with David in Ithica. The Tony Bennett/Bill
Evans Album and the Coltrane/Hartman are two of the best recordings ever
made on this planet. It doesn't get any better than that. BTW, Evans and
Bennett also made a follow up album, Tony Bennett & Bill Evans Together
Again. Not quite as good as the first, but still excellent.
