It's a really cool clip of George in 1976 watching old footage of the
Beatles miming "This Boy":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAZGpFrx8G0
It looks as though he may be reviewing an early cut of "The Long and
Winding Road". You can see Olivia behind him. Not sure who the guy is,
but he looks familiar.
Does anyone know where this clip came from? Someone in the YouTube
comments says it's from 'Granada Reports'. Whatever the case I'm
wondering where the rest of the piece is.
Thx
~ Chad
Are you aware there is an alternate take of "This Boy" on youtube?
Just thought I would mention it in case you were interested.
Jeff
One of the singles in 1996 had an alternate version with edits, being
without the familiar double-tracked vocals in parts. An interesting
vocal by John.
Unless I've mixed up This Boy with Yes It Is again.
Great find! I'm going to take a wild guess here. To me, George looks
exactly the same way that he looked when I was there at the NBC Studios
at Rockefeller Center in November '76. During the Saturday Night Live
rehearsal, he was wearing a sweater that looks as if it may be the same
one he's wearing in this clip... though it's hard to be sure. (He
changed his clothes for the taping of the show.) I know that Olivia was
with him during the taping, so this clip very well may have been taken
at the NBC studios in NYC on the day of the taping, possibly just before
he came down to rehearse.
Well, that's an interesting theory. I agree the clip is from 1976
(whoever posted the clip identified it as such, as well). But why would
he be watching film footage of a Beatles BBC appearance at NBC studios?

Hi Jeff. Is it the "thas boy" take that was released during the
Anthology, or something different?
~ Chad
I believe that this is not a BBC appearance, but The Ed Sullivan Show
appearance (CBS) from Miami.
Yeah, you're thinking of 'Yes It Is' as it appeared on the Anthology.
Two alternate takes of 'This Boy' (takes 12 & 13, unedited), appeared
on the "Free As A Bird" CD single.
Great moments on that one.
John: "Get this bloody little mic out 'the way."
Paul: "Don't be nervous, John, don't be nervous."
John: "I'm NOT."
~ Chad
No, actually it's a clip of them miming the studio track. Note they are
singing into thin air, no microphones. Here is the full clip George was
watching:

On Ed Sullivan in Miami they performed it live, John, Paul & George all
standing around one microphone:

I would love to hear it.
:-)
Chad, I don't know. I don't remember the Anthology release.
IF it's on youtube, I'll try and remember to check.
Thanks so much for mentioning this.
Jeff
I found this photo of him at the rehearsal before he changed clothes for
the SNL taping. It does seem to be the same sweater to me but, of
course, that's still no indication that this clip was taken the same
evening. But it does appear to be around the same time period of late
'76. And I wonder about your question regarding the BBC footage, as
well.
You know, I just remembered that his sister was also with George and
Olivia on the day of the SNL rehearsal, so she might be able to shed
some light on it. If I can get in touch with her and ask, I'll let you
know what she says.
It would help if I gave a link to the photo:
That is compelling, I have to admit. Thanks for the link! Man, I wish
there was more plain acoustic stuff like this out there of George's,
like the 'Beware of ABKCO' boot.
A clue to all this may be the identity of the other guy there, sitting
in front of Olivia. You get a good look at him when George throws his
head back laughing. The guy looks so familiar, I could almost swear
I've seen his face before. Band member? Journalist? Photographer? Dark
Horse staff? SNL employee? A&R guy?

This audio recording of "Bye Bye Love" was from the SNL rehearsal. The
guys were on a break (rehearsal and filming took three hours, total).
They turned up the lights and asked audience members if they had any
requests, and some were shouting out old Beatle tunes that he didn't
sing, and he kept telling him that. It was around the time of his
plagiarism suit and, being that I was only inches away from him, I
quietly (and stupidly) requested that he sing "He's So Fine." I hope he
didn't hear me, as he might not have realized that I only meant that as
a loving joke. The atmosphere was casual and I think I was getting a
little too comfortable.

If he was from the staff of Dark Horse, there's a way that I might be
able to find out, but it may take a while.
Cool! I can wait. :)

That story is too cool, btw.
~ Chad
It was a Granada TV clip, filmed in their Manchester Studio on Quay
Street. I believe that studio is now Granada TV's mail/post room.
No I actually own a tape that shows the Beatles performance on the Ed
Sullivan show in Miami and they did sing this song, but they were were
on a stage with a much lighter background and the teen age girls were
screaming like crazy. No this was not from the Ed Sullivan Miami
show. In Miami IIRC all three of them were huddled around one mike
See microknee finger's post. Yes he has it correct. During the Miami
Ed Sullivan show performance I recall Ringo looked like he felt just
terrible; he actually had visible chills at one point while he was
performing IIRC, never smiled, and looked like he had a terrible head
cold or sinus infection. Yes, during the link from the Ed show see
how bad Ringo looks. I felt sorry for him.
They played electric guitars and John's voice cracked during his solo
on the Miami Ed Sullivan episode.
Well, that clears up this mystery. Thanks, CJ! Yep, he's wearing the
same sweater, but this was filmed two weeks after the SNL taping.
Or rather *aired* two weeks later. Seems as if he's wearing the same
sky blue Dark Horse shirt underneath, too.
Back to stay?
That's not really my intention, Jim. I've been having problems with my
ears lately, so I'm trying to stay in a quiet environment as much as
possible.... off of the phone and away from any loud conversation or
noises. For entertainment, I've been mostly reading printed material
and surfing the web because I'm able to tolerate the low hum of the
computer. So these days, I keep finding myself back here. :/
I say...cool. Welcome back (for now).
I hope you have a speedy recovery! Have a fantastic holiday season
Thanks very much!
