I've long marveled at those runners who never seem to lose the fire as they move through life's decades. I revere those whose passion, like a bed of mature coals, sustains heat after years and years of experience, successes and failures, breakthroughs and setbacks. Review: If you are fortunate you get to become an older athlete. But in Run Strong, Stay Hungry Jonathan Beverly does more than rely upon luck to continue athleticism into the autumn (winter) of life. Using a practical approach of interviewing runners who continue to reap the benefits of exercise, there are interesting anecdotes, nuggets of advice and techniques, and an overall attitude that you can keep going.
It wasn't until I was talking with a friend about basketball that I realized the broader wisdom of this book. Upon asking him how his basketball was going he told me he had given up his favorite sport recently. He told me after playing at a high collegiate level and continuing to play until he was nearly 50 he had lost the love because he could no longer perform to his former levels. I told him about Run Strong, Stay Hungry. This isn't just a tip book for runners, it is a tribute to staying alive by learning to adjust expectations, absorb the fullness of life, continue to enjoy what you have loved. It is about not quitting and giving into the gaping mouth of death. Whoops, I just described how I feel at about mile 23 of a marathon.

Review: This masterfully written book incorporates the wisdom of respected, talented runners, and research to substantiate the author's findings for 9 keys to staying in the race. I read voraciously, comforted to know that I am not alone in my experiences as an aging, long-time runner. It's as though the author collected gems from his interviews with runners, and arranged this wealth of information into a practical guide that's easily digestible. Already, this book has helped me change my perspective--I never lost my love of running, but I needed to reignite the joy I always had in it--and I will refer back often, as so much of it hits home.

Review: Too many people loved this book for me to give it a worse rating but I just didn't connect with what was being written. It didn't break any ground for me as I already followed most of what was written. It's not brain surgery, if you like what you are doing you are going to put some effort into it. Just have fun. I've been running since I was 15 and I'm now 58. The passion is still as strong as it was when I was in my prime in my mid twenties. Just have fun and learn to accept that you will not be as fast as you were when you were younger. Compete with your own age level and you'll be fine
