No. It was a trumpet, though I don't remember what kind of. It was
played by David Mason and no, it hadn't been sped up.

Ya, its a piccolo trumpet played by sessions hornman Alun Civil - George
Martin says McCartney hummed the notes to him to indicate what he wanted on
the record. Some time before that particular track was done McCartney had
seen a television show with a symphony orchestra playing Bach's Brandenburg
Concerto and liked the sound of a particular horn. George told him what it
was and Paul said let's use it. Webster

Err... You're confusing names. The story is quite right, but it wasn't
Alan Civil who played trumpet on Penny Lane. It was David Mason (was he
a member of the London Philarmonic Orchestra? I'm not sure). Alan Civil
played French horn on "For no one".

Wow, this is pretty interesting: three different bits of Beatles
trivia all mixed up in one incorrect answer. :)
1. The piccolo trumpet was played by David Mason.
2. Alan Civil played on "For No One," but he didn't play a piccolo
trumpet, he played a French horn.
3. And the only "Alun" I know of is Alun Owen, "Hard Day's Night"
screenwriter.
