I don't know if it's the same photo but I've got one in an album of Beatles
sheet music 'Beatles 66' which is the songs from Rubber Soul. The picture shows
Paul with a capo on the 5th fret of his Rickenbacker George on acoustic and
George Martin on an electric keyboard. So what are they recording? In F?

There is another shot of the 3 of them with a back view of Paul's
bass + capo and a shot of John with a capo on his acoustic - 5th fret.

Also a shot of George with a capo on a 12 string and a shot of Ringo playing
an acoustic guitar.

RUBBER SOUL was "The Capo Album": Lennon played capo on most tracks.

With a capo on the fifth fret McCartney cannot play a note lower than
a low bass guitar A. That's the case in the following songs:

Low Key Capo Key
B Norwegian Wood E: A:
Michelle F: C:
In My Life A: E: (D is mostly the low note)

Bb Girl c: g:

A You Won't See Me A: E:
Nowhere Man E: B:
If I Needed Someone A: E: (A octave)

The remainding songs have a bottom bass note that is too low for a
fifth fret capo. It is interesting to note that McCartney only plays
an open E string in one place on the album (and on the first song they
recorded).

G# What Goes On E:

G Think For Yourself G:
The Word D:

F# Wait f#:

F I'm Looking Through Ab:

E Run For Your Life D:

Here are some rough notes on the candidate songs:

Low Key Capo Key comments
B Norwegian Wood E: A: Harrison plays Sitar
Michelle F: C: Interesting -- see below
In My Life A: E: Does Harrison play?

Bb Girl c: g: Wrong key completely.

A You Won't See Me A: E: Feasible
Nowhere Man E: B: Feasible
If I Needed Someone A: E: A octave would distort

None of the songs offers any great internal reason to use a capo.

However, McCartney seems to have originally played "Michelle" in C
major, the capo key he would use at the fifth fret. Perhaps they were
transposing the song to F when the picture was taken, with George and
George working out the chords.

Beyond that, it's hard to tell. The other photos mentioned in this
thread might provide more information. It's sometimes possible to
determine a session by comparing the clothes being worn by our fashion
conscious Beatles.

McCartney does seem to avoid the bottom register on the bass. I
haven't checked the other albums for that habit though.

November 65.

'<what proof can you offer?>'

Well, at least twenty photos of this session have been published. One with the
capoed Rick is in The Recording Sessions book with John (& G & P) scoping out a
photo of yo mama, poofy proofboy.

LOTS of guitars out on what I call Capo 5 Day:

John's Rick and Blue Strat are out in the fray as well as Paul's Casino, but
none of these are played during the shoot.

the Gibson J-160E Mk III makes its first appearance. If you're a diehard,
you'll know what this means. John & George rotate this with and without capo.

The mighty Rick bass also makes its first appearance with the capo curioso.

George is shown noodling on the Rick 360-12 (no capo) and the acoustic 12
string (with capo).

Paul dabbles on the Epiphone Texan (capoed) and the acoustic grand piano (not
capoed!) while John mans the classical (capoed) and plays a concert F minor
chord during the workout.

Sometime during which the future Sir George Martin sits at the Pianet, nailing
a C.

A single C and an F minor chord should narrow that down to...it ain't
Strawberry Fields.

Steak & peas with chips was the fête du jour and Rings played cards for capos.
