hi!! my name's tiffany, and i'm a 17-year-old beatles fan from lynnwood, wa, near
seattle. before students get out of this torture chamber they call "high school", we
have to write a big huge monstrous research paper. my topic is "How the Beatles
Influenced Current Music". i was wondering if anybody would be nice enough to tell me
if there are any groups *now* that you like or have heard of that sound like the
beatles. i'm basically looking for interviews from band members that say something like,
"yeah, i love the beatles. in fact, we got the idea for *such and such a song* from
their *really great song*." also, any beatles songs that were on soundtracks, or any
lyrics to relatively recent songs (since about the 80's) that have lines lifted from the
beatles. the groups i have so far are oasis (which was a dead give away), the rutles,
and a few little obscure references to the fab four. if you have anything you think
might help, i'd Greatly appreciate it. please reply to me at f...@bdsnet.com.

btw, i'm having SO much fun researching the beatles! it's like playing, but i'm getting
graded on it! :)

The soundtrack to the movie "Backbeat" features members of REM,
Afghan Wigs, Sonic Youth and Nirvana covering early Beatle tunes.
Also, British band Blur are fairly Beatle-esque at times.

Ummm... Oasis.. woops...
Blur are pretty beatles-sounding these days, especially the new single.
Apart from that most english bands are at the moment. Kula Shaker
utilise Indian instruments & sounds, as George did (& about a million
Indian artists did too).

Individual songs often sound like the Beatles...such as Supergrass'
"Alright" (i think it's called that) is todays version of Ob-la-di
Ob-la-da (but don't hold that against them ;) ). Also, the start of
Sleeper's "Sale of the century" is very Lennon sounding (and
deliberately done so, it's cool to sound like the Beatles these days),
as is the backing vocal bit to Blur's "Country House".

Oasis do at times, but their guitar sound (ie, distortion) is a cross
between rock & punk, so they don't *sound* like the Beatles as much as,
say, Blur sound like them.

Ok then,...........XTC!

Right now I'm listening to (and really enjoying) "Deadly Nightshade"
by "The Green Pajamas" which is on the compilation CD "Succour - The
Terrascope Benefit Album" and it sounds rather Beatleish, especially
the drumming. Of course I am aware this is rmb, but does anyone know
anything about "The Green Pajamas"?

Try Sloan's latest album. The single sounded especially Beatle-ish.

They arent like the Beatles but in some ways they are as good as the
beatles. They are Phish. Check em out. They are the best band of the
nineties by far. One of my favorites of all time. If you like the Grateful
Dead and The Beatles you will love Phish. Check em out. Any phish phans
out there?

has anyone seen the tribute band Rain? Simply amazing. I was especially
impressed with their George. But all four members had the mannerisms and
the music down pat.

Here are a couple that may not be so obvious:
Matthew Sweet - catchy songs, great harmonies, strong songwriting. Does a
decent cover of She Said She Said on a compilation CD too
Guided By Voices - indie band that mastered the art of lo-fi recording.
Wading through GBV's extensive catalog is a lot like collecting Beatlegs -
not every song is great (GbV pretty much release everything they record),
you have to accept the less than crystal clear sound, but when you find
that gem, it makes it all worth it. Fortunately their CDs are priced
pretty cheap. I suggest Alien Lanes or Bee Thousand for the uninitiated.
Happy hunting!

Have to agree with you about Oasis--and please, Oasis fans, don't flame
me. I don't begrudge you your tastes but I strongly disagree that this
group has anything new or interesting to offer. They can't even sing on
key, which automatically separates them from any Lennon-McCartney
comparisons. Blur is somewhat better but still not in the ballpark.

Agree with the others who nominate XTC (at least anything after their
first two albums, White Music and Go 2). My own XTC faves are Mummer, Big
Express, Skylarking and their last one, Nonsuch.

Of course there's always Squeeze, especially in East Side Story and Sweets
From a Stranger.

Jellyfish (now sadly departed) left us Bellybutton and Spilt Milk, two
brilliant, eclectic pop albums in the Beatles spirit.

A guy named Martin Newall has an incredible album called The Greatest
Living Englishman produced by Andy Partridge of XTC, which I think any
Beatle fan would enjoy. His latest, the almost impossible to find
Off-White Album, is obviously influenced by the Fabs.

The Finn Brothers, Tim and Neil, are two of the best singer-songwriters
mining the pop vein. They have a new album called The Finn Brothers, and
also did great work as Split Enz (see Time and Tide, Conflicting Emotions)
and Crowded House (start with the recent best-of compilation or
Woodenhead).

You might also check out Lloyd Cole, particularly Don't Get Weird On Me
Babe, or Rattlesnakes.

Reaching back into time, are you familiar with the Zombies? Odessey &
Oracle (intentional misspelling) was recorded same year as Sergeant Pepper
at about a tenth of the cost, but worthy of comparison in terms of song
quality and performance.

Then there's also middle-period Kinks (Something Else, Village Green
Preservation Society, a bunch of great singles).

If you're looking for Beatles sound-alikes, the most interesting (in my
opinion) is Crack the Sky's Animal Notes. A fun game is trying to list
every Beatles song or idea they rip off, and they're quite good at it.

Hope this helps, and anyone else, feel free to chime in.

XTC, yeah, definetly.
They recorded two EP's using the nom de plum: The Dukes of Stratosophear:
25 O'Clock (1985) and Psonic Psunspot (1987).
Both the EP's are compiled on a CD called:
CHIPS FROM THE CHOCLATE FIREBALL.
The first six songs on the CD are from the 25 O'Clock EP are wonderful
parodies/homages to the psychedelic Beatles; the other songs are also in
the mid 60's bent (like the Pet Sounds era Beach Boys tribute: Pale &
Precious).
Anyone who likes the Beatles and/or XTC should move Heaven and Hell to
find this CD.
Sorry if this is a little late for your paper, but, if you're lucky, you
can keep submitting revised copies throughout your academic career.
-btw- after Hi-Skool, life gets way better.
