really all about. See.... if you give animals enough rights, then you
won't be able to eat them anymore! I mean, it seems to me that the
number one right any living thing would have would be not to be

animals are superior to humans. Humans have a lot to learn from
animals, if only we would open our eyes.
Take just one example: a spider. Yes, a "lowly" insect. Supposedly a
creature that is "stupid" and far inferior to people. But has anyone
here actually studied the beauty of a web? How does such a supposedly
stupid creature learn to create such an engineering marvel, a tool
used to catch food? I bet many people here could not create such a
thing.
I have read scientific articles about scientists who have studied the
composition of a web. According to these articles, the threads in a
web are extremely thin, yet very strong. Some scientists maintain that
millimeter for millimeter, the material in a spider web is as strong
or stronger than the strongest steel or other metal than humans can
make to create, for example, cable wires.
Humans can learn a huge amount from nature. The fact is we don't fully
understand or appreciate it, so it is easy to convince ourselves that
"we are superior."

My point is that people can learn an awful lot from nature. IMO in
the long run it is dangerous for people to have the attitude that "we
are superior to animals and nature" and therefore can disrespect it,
destroy it, etc. People must understand we are part of an ecosystem.
The earth and its resources and ecosystems are not infinite. If
people continue with this attitude that the earth's resources are
infinite and can be abused, eventually that will come back to haunt
us.
IMO, various Native American peoples respected the earth and their
environment. Many people in Western civilization and certain other
civilizations do not. Western civilization tends to have the attitude
that the resources of the earth are there for the taking. We have it
coming to us.

As you may already know, according to Jewish religious law, it is OK
for people to eat meat. However, what many don't realize is that the
rules are very strict. There are all sorts of qualifications. Many
animals are forbidden and cannot be eaten (i.e. pork, shellfish).
There are rules about how an animal can be slaughtered (supposedly to
make the death merciful). There are rules forbidding the mixing of
milk and meat in the same meal or mixing milk and meat dishes in one
meal.
My point is that even though the Old Testament discusses many brutal
things such as wars, slavery, terrible floods, etc. there are constant
reminders that there are rules and restrictions in the killing of
animals. An animal is not merely an inanimate object, there for man's
sport to kill or torture. And this was recognized many hundreds of
years ago.

I'm not very good as far as religious details, but yes, I understand
that is one of the requirements if someone is observant of Jewish
dietary laws. The blood should be drained from the animal, and the
meat is often salted (and I believe, washed) to remove as much blood
as possible.

interest, this rule to avoid drinkiing/eating blood is very important
to the Jehovah's Witnesses who use this to justify their refusal of
transfusions of blood and I have met Jehovah's Witnesses who will buy
kosher meat specifically even though they are not Jewish. Jewish
dietary law is very complex, but today when an animal is slaughtered
for kosher meat a special knife is used and numerous anatomical areas
in the animal's neck must all be severed so it bleeds out rapidly. If
all of these areas are not cut with one swift stroke as I understand
it, the animal has not been killed in a kosher way.

for those who are vegetarian you are 100 percent correct in your
statement. Now for interest, I know a vegetarian Jewish couple and if
you carefully read Genesis chapter 1 lines 24-31 one might argue on
a Biblical basis that God gave Man and animals alike the plants of the
earth for food and he did say that Man could rule over the animals. He
did not say in Genesis that Man should eat the animals. So some
Jewish vegetarians would argue that in God's original plan Man was to

to add further debate to the discussion it is interesting that the
first nonplant thing mentioned in Genesis that was killed was when

does not say he killed it) to God and God favored Abel. We can debate

that in Genesis 4 line 4 Abel offered God "..the choicest of the
firstlings of his flock." It never says Abel killed or sacrified the
animal, just that he offered it to God. Interesting. It all makes you
realize killing animals occurred well out of the Garden of Eden when
the human race was now on their own, and not dependent on God in a
controlled lush environment.

What it makes me realize is that it is just a very old story featuring
murder, incest, war, and a lineage of delusional persons whose visions
were interpreted by religious authorities in the most favorable way to
bolster their own power. Make up your own damn mind about what is
ethical and just. That is the whole of the Law.

Actually, I seem to remember reading that it's forbidden to "shed"
blood, instead of (or maybe in adition) to drink it...
In any case, I think it's pretty clear that buy draining the blood
someone does not comply with such a law. Also, I don't think it's
actually possible to completely drain the blood.

Just for interest, as you may know, the Passover seder was the kind of
meal Jesus was having when he had the last supper. For those who are
vegetarians, there are cruelty free Passover seder meals and items on
the seder plate as well. Of course with all the other food
restrictions it may be a bit challenging to prepare such a meal but I
admire folks who adhere both to their religious observance and their
vegetarian principles.
