I played keyboards in a garage band back in the early '70s. Ray was a huge influence.

Certainly a style of his own. He was definitely a big part of my
formative music life too. R.I.P. Ray.

Me, too. I've always been a big Doors fan, and I still listen to them
often. They sounded like nobody else.

I remember buying the "Light My Fire" single, and being delighted to
find that the album version was 3 times longer! Audacious!

I guess I shouldn't be shocked when Rock musicians in their 70s pass
away, but Manzarek's death took me by surprise today.

He was the perfect organist for the Doors. He and Krieger
complemented each other.

I like to think Manzarek was the one who wanted to record Alabama
Song. He was very much the guy that formed the Doors.

I saw them twice in Chicago. A really unique band.

i think i read or heard that Robbie was the one interested on that
song, he made the arrangement or something like that.

ray's death is really sad.
i remember how incredible was for me when i was a kid, to know that he
played "the bass" with his left hand in his keyboard

I was terribly saddened by this news. What a shame. And I just saw him
recently on PBS promoting the redone Doors at Hollywood Bowl DVD. He looked
so good. I know that was likely recorded a few months back, but still...

Yes, I agree with another poster that their sound was unique. And another
who was impressed by his playing the bass line with his left hand.

There was a recent rebroadcast of a call in program on Public Radio where
the author of The Doors: A Lifetime of Listening to Five Mean Years, Greil
Marcus, was interviewed.

A lot of people were struck by how dark Morrison's lyrics are; some had to
stop listening. Well, I've never stopped listening. Yeah, some of the
lyrics are dark, but the overall package of the music and the lyrics keeps
me listening. And then there are some of the newer surround mixes to keep
things fresh.

He made a handful of decent solo albums, too. That first one... 'The
Whole Thing Started With Rock and Roll and Now it's Out of Control'
still rocks pretty solid. Yes, when they get into their 70s death is
to be expected. But who could ever get used to it? George Jones...
Richie Haves... and now Ray..? These are timeless talents. Too bad
they inhabited mortal bodies... Too bad for us all.
