A singer of a different kind, Crispian St Peters found his career
sinking under the weight of his own ego. Having achieved a number two
hit in January 1966 with his self-penned song, You Were on my Mind, he
declared that he was a better songwriter than Lennon and McCartney and
would be bigger than Elvis Presley. Unfortunately his second effort,
The Pied Piper, only reached number five. Undismayed he gave an
interview to a music magazine in which he said he was a more exciting
live performer than The Beatles, thereby earning himself the nickname
"The Cassius Clay of Pop". Born Robin Peter Smith, he began writing
songs at the age of 11 and had a stint as one half of a touring duo
called The Two Tories. The Pied Piper was to be his last hit.

Len Barry, who had been with The Dovells and had hits with them as

Baby" said something very similar. I remember it pissed me off at the
time for dismissing The Beatles was just not something that was to be
done.

BBC is wrong if they say he wrote You Were On My Mind. That's an Ian
and Sylvia song. Interestingly, although it was his biggest hit in
England, Pied Piper is what we know him from over here, so to say
"unfortunately....only reached number five" understates the success of
the record.

What'd he die of? Old age? Was 70 or so.

Thanks, the version by We Five was a hit earlier than Crispian St.
Peters and the one I am most familiar with.

Anytime anyone declares they are better than, or are going to be the
next, Beatles, it's the kiss of death, from the Bay City Rollers to
Oasis to the disappointing career of Eddie Murphy(who declared that he
was "The Beatles of Comedy".

Ditto...same goes for Jackson Browne.

Any music personbality who disses The Beatles is just expressing their
own insecurity, jealousy, and lack of judgement.

funny enough, I also don't like Todd Rundgren because he dissed some
Todd Rundgren songs that I like.

and naturally, and contradicting this particular prejudice, I just
disregard John Lennon's criticisms of his own Beatle songs
("*especially* Strawberry Fields!")
