Brian reportedly took tons of anti-psychotic drugs, apparently prescribed
by well-meaning doctors and others, the effects of which include slurred
speech and other physical dysfunctions. I believe the condition is
referred to a tardic dysconesia, though it may be spelled differently,
i.e, correctly. Very sad. Those interested in Brian may want to check out
the recent documentary by Don Was, called "I Just Wasn't Made For These
Times," which aired on the Disney Channel and should be out on video soon.
There's also a soundtrack cd on MCA of mostly Beach Boys' remakes by
Brian, but that's another thread...

I've heard that Brian Wilson is deaf in his one ear. And that he talks out of
the corner of his mouth to hear better.

It may have to do with his deafness in one ear. On NPR (_All Things
Considered_ or _Weekend Edition_) there was a story about the Brian
Wilson documentary that Don Was did for the Disney Channel. The
commentator asked Was about Wilson's speech, and Was said that Wilson
directs his speech toward his good ear. That's why he talks out of one
side of his mouth. I didn't hear him on the PBS special, but his speech
didn't sound especially slurred to me on the Sgt Pepper thing--that is, I
could understand everything he said, and he wasn't mumbling.

Tardive dyskinesia? The syndrome occurs, as you've noted, when narcoleptics
are prescribed to control depression and other mental problems, and can
also result in tics and other uncontrollable mannerisms such as lip
licking, etc. The physician must determine whether symptom control
is more valuable than side effects.

>Very sad.

Brian's cognitive ability may be intact, but his expression and eloquence
appear to be impaired. Very sad indeed.

There is also something called Bells Palsy (I hope I spelled it right)
which lames one side of the face. Sylvester Stallone suffers from this
which he why he always looks like he's talking out of the side of his
mouth. Sometimes the syndrome goes away and sometimes it doesn't.

Ah, this is how rumors start. Brian has two ears, not one.
Actually, in his lengthy essay on Brian, Nick Kent mentions
Murry Wilson's glass eye and *artificial ear*! First I'd,
um, heard of that.

ObBeatles: As long as they're doing cover tunes, I'd like
to hear the Beach Boys do some more Beatles.

As Saki stated, tardive dyskinesias may be relieved by discontinuing the
medication, but, unfortunately, they may be irreversible, especially if the
medication is not stopped promptly when the dyskinesia is first noted.

Brian is on quite a bit of medication for his mental problems, which probably
accounts for much of his speech slurring...coupled with the fact that
Brian tends to talk out of the left side of his mouth, because he's nearly
deaf in his right ear, and developed the habit so he could hear what he
was saying better. In fact, many people often ask if Brian has had a
stroke because he's always talking out of the side of his mouth.
