"One Night, John, Julian and I were watching Jesus of Nazareth on television and John began working himself up into a tirade against Christianity, saying that it had virtually destroyed what was left of pagan culture and spirituality in Europe -- a great loss to civilization. 'I'm a born-again pagan,' John said, with pleasure at the turn of phrase. Julian looked at him, puzzled at first, and then aghast, as John kept saying, 'Let's have the main event, let's get to the Crucifixion already!' Although I could sense Julian's discomfort, I knew John was not being cruel. It was simply his sarcastic nature, he liking for the outrageous. When we watched Deliverance on TV, for instance, John kept saying, 'I can't wait to get to the butt-fucking scene!'

"Needless to say, it was edited out."

Dubious.

"Let's get to the Crucifixion already!" - that bizarre misuse of words
(not to mention gross anomaly in the time-space continuum) is a
recent(?) USA linguistic 'innovation' that no Brit would be seen or
heard dead using.

I don't find it dubious. Lennon had embraced New York street talk. Also, his Jesus fixation and love of being outrageous are well-known.
