Does anyone know (as if there is any doubt that someone does) who the
Loretta Martin from the song Get Back is? Is she related to George
Martin and also how is she related to the song (ie. why did she think
she was a women when she was really a man)?

Loretta Martin was almost certainly a fictional character-and certainly
no relation to George. The latter reference....'she' was a transvestite;
and probably-the lyrics are obviously ambiguous as it was 1969!- a
hooker:" All the girls around her said 'she's got it coming';
But she gives it while she can"
is what I've always taken the lyrics to be.

You don't expect that kind of material from McCartney-especially not
four years before Lou Reed broached the subject in "Walk On The Wild Side"

I always thought it was "But she gets it while she can." Never thought
about the transvestite angle -- just assumed the lyrics were silly --
but ever since the "Long, Tall Sally" string....

Loretta Martin in the song is based on a lady named Loretta Fart, who thought
she was a cleaner, but she was a frying pan. This is on the authority of John
Lennon, and he should know. ;-)

The reason some people say "modern" is that it was that way on the
original blue album lyric sheet--along with some other very odd goofs!

I always assumed it was Modern also... it makes sense to me, in
a womens lib sort of vein

"Sweet Loretta Modern thought she was a woman, but she was
another man,
All the girls around her say shes got it comin,
so she gets it while she can."

Like I say, I can see this being a reference to womens lib. Haven't
heard the song for a while tho, so don't flame me for botching up
words - I'm too busy trying to play Georges stuff!

It can't possibly be "Modern", unless you're American. This is like the
person who managed to transcribe the chit-chat in Let It Be as "Oh my soul...
so odd.", where it's clearly "... so hard." The phonemes are nothing like
each other in an English accent.

Loretta Martin was Paul's code name for Yoko. Don't believe it? Check
out Ram, where Paul again mentions
Loretta in an outragously angry tone that at the same time, imitates
Yoko's trademark screaming of that period in the cut: "Monkberry Moon
Delight". Her her was a tangle. John Lennon also remarked that he
didn't think he was paranoid by noticing that EVERY time, during the
Let It Be Sessions, that McCartney sang the line GET BACK, when
reheasing that song, that Paul would make a point to turn to look at
Yoko who was ALWAYS THERE, which the other three couldn't stand.
Therefore, who else could Loretta be BUT Yoko Ono? "She thought she
was a woman... all the girls around said she's got it coming? Get
back to where you once belonged. Get back Loretta! Get back home"
Have you ever heard the blood curdling 6 minute out-take, where
McCartney is screaming Get Back, over and over and over, practically
swallowing the microphone?!
I believe John was correct!

Believe it or not but I have it on the best authority that Loretta Martin
is code for Loretta Feldman (comedian Marty Feldman's wife) who was a bit
"manly" shall we say. "Loretta MARTIN/ MARTY (Martin) Feldman?" The
Beatles used to hang around Marty and the Pythons and his wife and her
"antics" was frequently the topic of much conversation.

But that take was recorded when Get Back was still "No Pakistanis".
Still, you make some good points.

You might as well also mention that during '68 and '69, whenever
John was MIA from the studio due to a romantic rendezvous with Yoko
in the EMI equipment closet, the rest of the Beatles would use the
code phrase "Monkberry Moon Delight" to indicate such activity.

And then, though tangental, there's "coral fish-and-finger pies,"

Paul, I agree with you more than any of the other explanation about this song online. It is clear that she is a he. What upsets me though is the Beatles keep calling him a her, or "she" after it is clearly established that he is ANOTHER MAN. And why does he need to get back HOME to his mother who (the song tells us) is trying to be sexy? Personally, I don't mind it when other people's mother's are sexy, just not MY mother. Is that why he ran away from home? Because his mother maybe embarrasses him? But that doesn't explain why he engages in high risk behaviors as you say "giving" while he can. BTW, the song does say he "GETS IT" while he can. That's what they sing, so don't get all creative and start adding in your own embellishments. Don't try to change words or meanings NOT intended. Just the facts. Are there any real facts? The Beatles are obviously sympathetic towards tyranny's. I don't get the Fart, Cleaner, Frying Pan references. A lot of comments online state this verse is some sort of joke. How is that funny?

Loretta Martin was a second cousin to Polythene Pam. That's my deluded take and I'm sticking to it.

I understand, too, that Loretta used to sneak out at night, and get
back into her parents' house through the bathroom window.

Loretta Martin was one of my dad's roomates in college. She was a real person and she wrote to the Beatles all of the time. She is/was a transgender woman of the same name.

At the time, the Beatles often put content from their fan mail into their songs. My dad was always adamant that the transgender woman he lived with (in Amherst Massachusetts) was the Loretta Martin of the song. She was reportedly quite excited that she got a mention. I always wondered what she thought of the lyrics. She was born with the last name, 'Martin' and adopted Loretta later in life.
Unfortunately my dad died in 2013. But UMass Amherst in the late 1960s would be a good place to start.

what i find crazy about this is that the first comment in this thread was in 1996! isn't that absurd? and no one has written here for FOUR years. Though I guess we'll never know who Loretta Martin is though...(unless we ask paul to confirm lol) BEATLES WILL LIVE ON FOREVER!!!

It's a song about gender dysphoria. The Beatles really were ahead of their time.
