But more importantly, how did he make the Beatles cd's sound better
than the Apple/Capitol releases? What exactly does he do to them, and
how? (Again, I don't mean EXACTLY how; that would probably be
impossible to say, but I mean what kind of process does he put the
lp's through? Does he add reverb? Compression? or ?
All I know is I like the way they sound! Especially the mono versions!
And what is the general consenus here? Are Dr. Ebbetts versions better
than the Millennium Remasters? I was just reading some old threads
from this group and it seems that some people preferred the MR's but
most preferred the Dr. E versions. Is that still the case?
Is Dr. E. still in business or has he already done all he is going to
do?
He works in sound engineering and production.
> Does he have a web site or sell his stuff via mail order or ? how does
> he sell his Beatles cd's?
He sells strictly by mail order from a mailing list of carefully approved
customers who have demonstrated their ability to be "discrete". All of his
titles, including cover photos, are posted on a web site operated by another
dealer. For security reasons, I choose not to post the web site address.

He uses only orignal mint condition vinyl sources. He employs lots of
studio tricks and techniques to produce the "Ebbett's sound".
> All I know is I like the way they sound! Especially the mono versions!
>
> And what is the general consenus here? Are Dr. Ebbetts versions better
> than the Millennium Remasters? I
The Millennium Remasters are widely acknowledged as being the best
representation of the Beatles' recorded legacy currently available on CD.
What makes them special is the 24-bit remastering, which brings out all
sorts of musical nuances and details from the original mixes. You will hear
musical definition and detail on the MR's that can't be heard on the
Ebbett's titles.
> it seems that some people preferred the MR's but
> most preferred the Dr. E versions. Is that still the case?
The MR's are siginificantly more expensive than Ebbett's versions and are
therefore not as widely distributed. Hence, it is NOT accurate to say that
"most" prefer the Dr. E versions, as "most" bootleg buyers haven't really
heard them.
> Is Dr. E. still in business or has he already done all he is going to
> do?
Having reproduced the the Beatles' entire British and American catalog...and
many other foreign releases...he is now more or less "scraping the bottom of
the barrel" insofar as "new" releases are concerned. In fact, he is
currently planning some releases that are not originals, i.e., he is
compiling his own titles with songs selected by him.
I'm told he is also planning to release the Japanese import versions of the
original "1962 - 1966" and "1967 - 1970" red and blue double LP releases
from 1973. Unlike the current releases of those titles, the Japanese
versions contain stereo mixes of every song known to be available in stereo.

THE BEATLES "White Album" - US stereo LP (2 CDs) (Apple SWBO 101)
The US version of the double LP - which contains identical mixes to the UK
version already available by Ebbetts. Dynamically, it has all the earmarks
of a Capitol release. . .a little compression, a little less bass. . . .
It includes the four photo inserts, as always. .These will, naturally, have
the US numbering series - all beginning with the letter A. No duplicate
numbers will be issued.
YELLOW SUBMARINE - US stereo LP (Apple SW 153)
The US version. Again, sourced from the original US LP, the mixes are
identical to its UK counterpart. This one, however, has artwork that differs
in a few areas than the British release. First of all, the back of the US
LP contains a funny little narrative written by Dan Davis, complete with
little pictures of the main characters of the film, whereas the UK version
has a review of the "White Album." Secondly, the track listing differs
somewhat on the US version. Wheras the UK version has "Sea of Time" and "Sea
of Holes" as different tracks, the US version has them listed as a medley
(one track).
Therefore the Ebbetts UK version has 13 tracks. The Ebbetts US version has
12.

SESSIONS US LP (Capitol ST-12373) EMI "Montage" Artwork
First off, Ebbetts has decided to RE-release this title with the original
EMI "montage" artwork. The original Ebbetts artwork version will still be
available, but this one will be the "standard" as far as the Ebbetts'
catalogue is concerned. The source audio will be identical to the original
Ebbetts version, but there will be TWO ADDITIONS to this title.
The first addition will be a stereo edit of "One After 909" from March,
1963. It will be a complete version, structed much like the released version
from the "Let It Be" LP. I have yet to hear a well done complete STEREO
version of this song anywhere. Furthermore, this version will be subjected
to the same "retooling" that Ebbetts employed on the very well received
REMIXED first two stereo British LPs - that is, the vocals and bass will be
centered, while the rest of the stereo image remains in tact. I call it "new
stereo."
The other addition - undertaken out of sheer frustration with stuff already
out there - is a version of "Let It Be" with both guitar solos (single and
LP versions) playing simultaneously. Again, I'm not really a big fan of
"remixing" a catalogue that already borderlines on perfection. The first two
British LPs were an experiment that went well for the most part. This is
just the continuation of that project.

COLLECTORS ITEMS SPRO 9463 (unreleased Capitol LP)
(with two special Dr. E outfake bonus tracks)
CASUALTIES US LP (Capitol SPRO-9469)
This title complements the other "unreleased" Capitol LPs in the Ebbetts
catalogue (Sessions, Collectors Items). This is sourced from a few different
places - mostly tracks that already exist in the Ebbetts catalogue
elsewhere. It employs the original "butcher cover" design, and comes
complete with liner notes on the back, just like the original "unused" LP
back.
This title also includes two Ebbetts' outfakes - to help find a home for the
tracks that really couldn't fit anywhere else.
First, an Ebbetts attempt to make "Love Me Do" a stereo track. This one
works pretty well. It doesn't involve tracking the two different versions as
they play side by side, or using any sort of delay. . . .Just give it a
listen.
The second is yet another Ebbetts "new stereo" remix - another song that
needs it. . . . ."From Me To You."

PAST MASTERS - US stereo LP (2 CDs) (Capitol C1-91135)
This two disc set is sourced from the Capitol double LP issue. It sounds a
bit warmer to my ears than the commercial CDs and was worth a spin on the
Ebbetts turntable. Each CD's front insert artwork replicates the design of
the double LP in that it has the white lettering on black background for
BOTH discs (unlike the commercial CDs which went for the Yin Yang deal).
However, what Ebbetts has done here to complement this release is do
something EMI should have done with their "1" CD release. Ebbetts includes
with this two CD set the four Richard Avedon photos as inserts. For some
reason, only those who bought the "1" album on vinyl were privelaged enough
to get the four psychedelic Avedon photos as individual inserts. The CD
buying public were jipped! Therefore, Ebbetts now includes these four photos
with every "Past Masters" set - just like the four inserts included with the
"White Album."
It had to be done.

CONOZCA A THE BEATLES - Mexican stereo LP (Capitol SLEM 007)
This LP pretty much uses the US mixes of all songs - including the duophonic
mixes of "I Want To Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," "I'll Get You" and
"This Boy." However, there is a very strange and POORLY done duophonic mix
of "From Me To You" on this LP that I've never heard before.
1 Beatles La Vi Alla (I Saw Her Standing There) 02:54
2 Beatles Quiero Estrechar Tu Mano (I Want To Hold Your Hand) 02:24
3 Beatles Ella Te Ama (She Loves You) 02:22
4 Beatles Seras Mia (I'll Get You) 02:08
5 Beatles De Mi Parta Ti (From Me To You) 01:56
6 Beatles Gracias Nina (Thank You Girl) 02:03
7 Beatles Quiero Ser Tu Hombre (I Wanna Be Your Man) 01:59
8 Beatles No Otra Vez (Not A Second Time) 02:05
9 Beatles No Me Molestes (Don't Bother Me) 02:27
10 Beatles Pequeno Nino (Little Child) 01:46
11 Beatles Abrazame Fuerte (Hold Me Tight) 02:30
12 Beatles Este Muchacho (This Boy) 02:13
THE BEATLES VOLUME 2 - Mexican stereo LP (Capitol SLEM 044)
This one is quite odd, in that the first six tracks aren't stereo at all.
They are actually a very poor attempt at duophonic sound - the trebles
emphasized on the right channel, the bass frequencies on the left. Again,
I've never heard these songs in duophonic. (I'm not sure I'm happy I did). .
.
1 Beatles Al Compas De Beethoven (Roll Over Beethoven) 02:48
2 Beatles Por Favor, Por Favor (Please Please Me) 02:04

12 Beatles No Sera Mucho (It Won't Be Long) 02:11
THE BEATLES VOLUME 3 - Mexican stereo LP (Capitol SLEM 045)
The second track - "Money" - is the mono mix. Interestingly enough, "You
Can't Do That" is in true stereo here (unlike "The Beatles Second Album"
which is duophonic)
1 Beatles El Diablo En Su Corazon (Devil In Her Heart) 02:29
2 Beatles Dinero Es lo que quiero (Money) 02:47
3 Beatles Anna Ve a el (Anna) 02:53

10 Beatles Por Favor Senor Cartero (Please Mr. Postman) 02:31
11 Beatles Me Has Atrapado (You Really Got A Hold On Me) 02:58
12 Beatles No Puedo Comprar Mi Amor (Can't Buy Me Love) 02:10
THE BEATLES VOLUME 4 - Mexican stereo LP (Capitol SLEM 008)
This is, essentially, the "Hard Day's Night" LP - sans "Can't Buy Me Love"
and "You Can't Do That," and including "Long Tall Sally." All tracks are in
true stereo.
1 Beatles Una Dura Noche (A Hard Day's Night) 02:36
2 Beatles Debia Conocerla Mejor (I Should Have Known Better) 02:44
3 Beatles Si Cai (If I Fell) 02:20

This LP is the identical mix of the US version.

I like to think that I'm discreet.
I trade boots (CDRs). Theoretically, a digital copy of digital media
should be perfect, but I've received quite a few imperfect CDRs from
traders (perhaps they don't use EAC).
Anyway, in case you're interested, here's my Trader Rating page from
BootlegZone:

As you can tell, I have quite a few Ebbetts releases, but they're all
CDRs. I'd love to have an original. Do you know how much they run? Do
you know how I can demonstate to Dr. E that I am worthy?
Thanks!

Just in case any of the newer members missed the hint above by putting the
word unreleased in quotes - the above two disks are not legitimate Capitol
Records creations, but amazing looking bootleg LPs from the late 70s,
complete with Capitol labels, logos, and other Capitol artwork. The first
one, Collectors Items, filled a gap in the US releases, and the editing of
the Trumpet Coda onto the stereo Penny Lane was copied by Capitol itself
when releasing the US Rarities LP. The original LPs are extremely cool. I
have no idea how much Ebbetts has messed with the sound, but the original
bootlegger was apparently an audio engineer and did a great job.
Who!?
