I was not familiar with Joe Brown before seeing Concert For George.
In the film, he talks about how The Beatles used to open for him, and
he shows a poster advertising a show from those days. However, a
quick scan of Mark Lewisohn's Beatles Chronicle turns up no listing of
a show where The Beatles open for Joe Brown or The Bruvvers. Is Joe
Brown being truthful?

Lewisohn was a bit lacking in his cross-referencing :-)

True, the only listing in the index is for a date where the Beatles
replaced Joe Brown (December 13, 1962), but if you had looked at the
poster in "Concert for George" a bit closer you would've seen the dates
in question: July 26 and July 27, 1962. The two showcases were at
Cambridge Hall in Lancashire, and the Tower Ballroom. Lewisohn's entry
is as follows:

"[...] promoted by Brian Epstein's NEMS Enterprises, showcasing Joe Brown
and his Bruvversm and the Beatles. At the time, Brown stood at number
three in the charts with 'A Picture of You,' one of Epstein's favorite
pop records and also a new feature of the Beatles' own stage act, sung
by George."

The two were actually pretty close friends through the years, and
George appeared on Joe Brown's BBC radio show "Let It Rock" in 1999.

Joe Brown was among the players on George's television performance of
"Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" (which ended up on "Brainwashed")

Joe Brown and his Bruvvers also played Stella Mac's
eighteenth birthday party in 1989.

I believe the "Old Brown Shoe" may have actually been Joe's.

Ed forgets Joe's daughter Sam - she has a great singing
voice, has had some worthy hits in the UK, and also features
in there somewhere... :-)

Not forgotten, just not mentioned. Sam Brown is the attractive
vocalist who does the lead on the Concert for George version of
"Horse to the Water." More than you ever wanted to know about
her can be found here:

http://www.onecandle.co.uk/

I wasn't aware of the fact she had briefly collaborated with both
Paul "Wix" Wickens and Robbie Macintosh.

My P.N.T.B.P. book, which is now complete through February 1964, has the
following page:

-People - Brown, Joe & The Bruvvers-
Popular Mersey area group.

05/19/1962 - Their version of the Johnny Beveridge/Peter Oakman song A
Picture Of You first enters the British charts. The Beatles perform the
song during live concerts and record it for radio broadcasts.

07/26/1962 - Appear with The Beatles at Cambridge Hall, Lord Street
Southport, Lancashire. Joe Brown & the Bruvvers, have a hit at #3 in the
charts, A Picture Of You, one of Brian Epstein's personal favorites, and
The Beatles include it in their stage act, with George Harrison taking
the lead vocal.

07/27/1962 - Brian Epstein presents the group at The Tower Ballroom,
Promenade, New Brighton, Wallasey, Cheshire, England, heading a bill
including The Beatles. A big fight arises during the show.

12/13/1962 - When Brown has to cancel, The Beatles perform at The Corn
Exchange, St. Paul's Square, Bedford, Bedfordshire, England with Robin
Hall and Jimmie MacGregor.

12/18/1963 - (7:00-10:30pm) Appear with The Beatles, Susan Maughan,
Jeanie Lambe, Rolf Harris, Kenny Lynch, The Kenny Salmon Seven, and Alan
Elsdon's Jazzband with Mick Emery at a taping for a special two-hour BBC
radio program, initially to be called "Beatletime", but ending up as
"From Us to You." The show is broadcast 12/26/1963 from 10:00-12:00
noon.

12/26/1963 - 10:00-Noon - Appear with The Beatles, Susan Maughan, Jeanie
Lambe, Rolf Harris, Kenny Lynch, The Kenny Salmon Seven, and Alan
Elsdon's Jazzband with Mick Emery on the broadcast of a special two-hour
BBC radio program, called From Us To You. The show had been recorded
12/18/1963.

And one of the standout performances in the concert, IMHO. She does an
absolutely terrific rendition of the song.

George Harrison in particular was a huge Joe Brown fan; I recall an early
photo c. 1962 of George holding Brown's guitar backstage with evident
pride.

In later days Joe and George were great pals. Joe hosts a BBC/Radio
Berkshire radio show about pop music. He's done retrospectives of
skiffle, rock, and on one memorable show (which a kind fellow taped for
me) had George on mike with him to talk about George's favorite music of
the fifties and sixties.

Brown seems to have been fairly prominent as a session guitarist around that
period. He was part of the orchestra for the Boy Meet Girls tv show and I
have him playing on a John Barry reissue from then.

Joe Brown and The Bruvvers are also listed in the Lewisohn live book
under a few of the "songs the Beatles covered live" entries...

The one that stands out the most in my mind is "Henry The 8th"...

Apparently the same song most people because it
was covered by Herman's Hermits... ("I'm 'enry the 8th
I am... I got married to the girl next door... she'd been
married seven times before and everyone was a 'enry")

I actually have a Joe Brown and the Bruvvers collection and
it sadly omits Joe's version of "Henry The 8th"... but
it does have "Picture of You"... which is actually
easily found on one of the Beatles BEEB boots...

I'd LOVE to have been there when the Fabs played "Henry
the 8th"... presumeably during the Cavern days or in
Hamburg...

Truth is if someone offered me a time machine and allowed
to choose just one Beatle event I could travel to...
I'd probably chose to hear them sing "Henry The 8th"

Call me wierd - LOL
