Hello I was wondering if anyone new if any memeber of the Beatles was
able to speak a forigen language?

I was surprised to read recently (in Reader's Digest) that Paul speaks
rather fluent Spanish. The brief article was about how he had made an
effort to speak to some fans in Spanish at a concert somewhere in South
America.

All the Beatles managed to pick-up a little German during their stays in
Hamburg, and I remember hearing George in an interview saying that he
took German in school. John and Paul took a vacation in Paris in 1961,
though they evidently did not pick up French too well. The trip did
produce the begginings of the song "Michelle", though it was Ivan
Vaughan's wife who helped Paul with the French passage in the tune (she
was a French teacher).

Yes, they did live in Germany off and on for almost 4 years, so they must
have spoken enough to get by.

Also there are German versions of "She loves you" and "I want to hold your
hand" on past masters 1

They all spoke some German from their frequent trips there.

John apparently learned to speak fluent Japanese during his "home-baking-
bread" period.

George may speak some Hindi--I read that somewhere but I don't remember
where so I'm not sure how accurate it was.

wasn't Spanish one of the only classes Pauly actually passed? and also, correct me if i'm wrong, i have
no experience with such things, but it seems to me that an overwhelming percentage of British people are
able to speak French. i think John learned a bit of Japanese, as well. anybody know if George speaks
Indian? i can't think of any others.

I have spoken to Ringo in the past about such matters and he proved to
me he speaks fluent Dutch (this is true I interviewed him for a Dutch
magazine and he was able to wish the readers Happer christmas etc in
Dutch)

Actually, yes. All four Beatles could speak English
quite fluently.

According to Wheelock's Latin Textbook Paul was also a student of Latin
though I doubt he spoke it to often.

Kudos to whomever answered that, yes, they spoke Liverpudlian.

Lennon learned a certain amount of Japanese. He could probably make small talk, order in Japanese restaurants (in Japan, I mean), apologize to Yoko in her native tongue, and so on.

And they could certainly sing German. And presumably speak and
understand it at a very basic level.

You're right. On one of J&Y's Dick Cavett show appearances, Cavett says something to Yoko in Japanese. She says, "Ahhhhh" in recognition. Not wanting to be left out, Lennon speaks a sentence of German to Cavett.

Hey they did learn to speak a little rudimentary German. There's proof!

O komm doch, komm zu mir, du nimmst mir den Verstand

O komm doch, komm zu mir komm gib mir deine Hand,

Komm gib mir deine hand, komm gib mir deine hand

O du bist so sch÷n, sch÷n wie ein Diamant

Ich will mit dir gehen, komm gib mir deine hand,

Komm gib mir deine hand, komm gib mir deine hand

Komm gib mir deine hand, komm gib mir deine hand.

In deinen Armen bin ich glcklich und froh, dass war noch nie bei einer andern

Einmal so, einmal so, einmal so.

O du bist so sch÷n, sch÷n wie ein Diamant

Ich will mit dir gehen, komm gib mir deine hand,

Komm gib mir deine hand, komm gib mir deine hand,

Komm gib mir deine hand
