Hey!
This may seem like a strange or highly unusual (or perhaps even dumb, depending
on the level of Beatle knowledge that you yourself may hold), but does anyone
know any brands of cigarettes that John Lennon smoked? I know one brand that
is foreign, but I would like to know if there are any domestic (read: US)
brands that he may have taken up while he was living in NYC. Saki, shall I
leave this one for you, or is it just a little too obscure? I need this info
for a novel-in-progress that I would like to be as historically correct as
possible.
Dumb/weird question #2: Would John have taken Sean out for walks along/in
Central Park? Did he do this sort of thing often? (I'm talking around late
1980, maybe a month or a couple of weeks before he....)

I'd appreciate any answers that I can get! Thanks for your help!

RE: Ciggies
I'm not sure, but it might have been "Dunhill".
On page 129 of Ethan Russell's book "Dear Mr.
Fantasy" theres a photo from the Let It Be
Sessions of the clipboard containing the words
for Don't Let Me Down. On the clipboard is resting
a half empty tea (coffee?) cup, and an empty pack
of what looks like cigarettes. Is "Dunhill" a
UK brand? Anyone have any info on this? I'm
returning this modem tomorrow, but if somebody
really knows drop me a postcard at PO Box 751
New Monmouth NJ 07748 and please let me know.
I've been thinking about The Beatles cigarettes
all weekend, believe it or not, wondering if
"Negro In Reserve" (an outtake from the LIB
sessions) could possibly refer to that European
brand of black cigarettes (whatever THAT'S
called). Mr Carter! Would you care to move to
New Jersey for a month?! :-).
(Don't answer that... at least by e-mail!)

Lewisohn mentions that during the marathon recording session of Feb 11,1963
the Beatles smoked Peter Stuyvesant cigarettes incessantly.
I seem to remember that during the 1964 US tour Lennon smoked Kents "with
the microneat finger" and tried to take back a huge quantity

Those are Sabraini's, I think. They are black w/ a gold filter. They
also sell them in rainbow color packs, also w/ the gold filter I believe.

I have NO IDEA whether John smoked any of these, however. I think I
remember him smoking something in _Imagine_, I think, so you might wanna
watch that for something.

I'm pretty certain that John smoked Gauloise, those "powerful" french black
tobacco cigs popular with artistes,I think they're called Corporals as well.
In his later years,he smoked Marlboros as well. Doesn't he have a pack of these
in one of his "Imagine"era home movies?

Of course we all know, The Beatles liked to roll their own as well.

Someone beat me to it---he smoked the foreign brand Gitanes (much more
trendy than American brands...even Shermans) but if you really want
to make your novel authentic, you might have John recall the Woodbines
he used to smoke in Liverpool. In NYC, John was also a nut for Italian
bittersweet chocolate (Luisa brand) and had friends bring over from
Britain chocolate-covered "Oliver Bath" biscuits (remember: biscuits
to the English are cookies to the Yanks).

As for walking with Sean in Central Park, not only did they frequent
this locale, but John was also a regular at the Edwardian Room at
the Plaza Hotel and a Central Park restaurant called Tavern on the
Green, where he took Sean for the lad's fourth birthday. You might
want to work this in.

Galloise. Spelling may be wrong. Foreign, obviously.

I don't see why not. I lived in NYC in the 70's and while I never saw
John myself, I knew people who did. Apparently at one point he was fond
of hanging out at a coffee shop down the block on Columbus Ave. There's
the videos of him walking with Yoko in the park etc, so I think it would
be unlikely that he wouldn't take Sean across the street to one of the
prettiest sections of Central Park.

He smoked various brands. If you were a smoker around the late sixties, these
names would be familiar. Players, British hard pack with a sailor on the
label (pictured on a Procol Harum LP). Sher Biddi [sp], Egyptian or Indian
brand [?] tied with a string [yes!]. Zig-Zag, Canadian [ I think ] they were
available in cans and packs with the "man" on the label. Marlboro. Nat Sherman, NYC [still in business?] all varieties (these were all tobacco cigs, no
additives). Goalwaz [this is the phonetic spelling], a French brand in a blue
hard flat pack with "victory" (or someone looking like her) and, if I remember
correctly, a winged wheel on the label ( a pretty label ). English Ovals.
Well that's all I remember seeing him with. The Goalwaz [sp] pack was on the
bed in those pix of him at the Dakota.

According to the Bressler book "Who killed John Lennon", he smoked a
brand of cigarette called "Gitane" which I have never heard of. It
mentions how he used to sit in the Cafe La Fortuna on West Street and
drink cappucino and smoke a "Gitane" cigarette while reading the
newspaper.

Page reference for this is 122.

Has anyone heard of this cigarette brand ?

Malcolm Allan
University of Edinburgh.

P.S. It also mentions that John DID walk with Sean in Central Park.

This dude must be the all-time champion of Beatless
retards, posting to a thread that's TWENTY-SEVEN
fucking years old. Most of the people on it are
probably dead or have other reasons not to give a
shit. And naturally - par for the RMMB course - it's
momentous information. What color were Ringo's nickers

Listen here,
This is the first Beatles forum I’ve ever posted to. I Am not a loser fan, I like music. I’m 15 and recently took a music theory class, and when I was confused about how we got from Gershwin to Billie Eilish in 90 years, my teacher suggested I listen to the music and hear the change for myself. Over the past month, that’s what I’ve been doing, and I must say that some of the older songs and bands have really struck me, specifically the Beatles. John Lennon was an interesting character, and cigarette type can tell you a lot about a person. I posted to an old forum, and I will not be told that I am a loser by some jerk on the internet for being interested in something. Go get a life and stop harassing people on the internet for their passion. Where else would you expect specific Beatles knowledge to be but on a specific forum. If you don’t like the Beatles, stay away from the forums. Have a good day!

Lord Valve just a bit grumpy this morning - you tell 'im.

But I would disagree about the 'cigarette type' assertion, other than
that the person's smoking of cigarettes indicates a lack of commonsense.

However in context of the time I guess that Gitanes might indicate a
wish to be seem as a bit 'out there'. Possibly a contrivance, or act of
rebellion.

Some people come here to rant, insult others, and basically bark at the moon. Your best bet is to ignore him.

Anyway, John smoked Gauloises.

According to his lover May Pang, Lennon was smoking two packs a day by the mid-70s. He had developed shortness of breath and a chronic cough and was desperate to quit.

The asshole's gone. He did his best to make RMB an unpleasant place, bitching at people because the Beatles music they liked was several decades in age. Yet it was perfectly okay for him to be obsessed with TV jingles that were even older. Good riddance to that hypocritical lump of excrement.
