Bought this LP at a Boot sale for 50p today by Tears for Fears. It's a rip
off of the fabs but I can't place it! I think it's Penny Laneish possibly.
Any ideas?

Ian this is your ball park. Chord wise, dunno if you've heard it but the
song is *very* Beatly.

There is an I am the Walrus feel about it.

Dan....they intentionally did the song in a very Beatley way, incorporating
quite a few licks and riffs.

Yeah, AYNIL and IATWalrus are evident, just the whole structure of the song
yells Beatles.

It's a great tune.

Opening has that Walrus-y chant against the Time Marchs On chord
changes.

Chorus has "Hello Goodbye" chords, with the same bass descent, and
finishes like "Lady Madonna".

Interesting stuff. I guess their natural home is a bit heavier.

I listened to "Wonderboy" by the Kinks today. I thought it was John
singing at the start.

Even if it borrows from the Beatles, I wouldn't call it a rip-off. I like
the attitude of Tears For Fears, from what I know of it. My guess is that it
was more an homage to the Beatles than a rip-off. Besides, the Beatles
borrowed from other musicians too, and in one case (My Sweet Lord) borrowed a
little too much, although that was George's solo project, not the Beatles.

I prefer the sentement behind songs like Sowing the Seeds of Love to the
current negativity in a lot of modern music. In that sense I wish more groups
would emulate the Beatles.

Rip off or tribute?
It's a fine album methinks.

There are some stylistic similarities with
All You Need Is Love and I Am The Walrus.

There is also the very obvious "Penny Lane"
trumpet copy towards the end of the song
Aerosmith did the same the thing with
their song: "Love In An Elevator".

It is okay to borrow from various styles ...
but the pseudo-PL trumpet thing is a bit
stale. I wish bands would not reach for
something so "cliche" as that.

Check out them doing it live where their guitarist totally references a guitar riff from Hello Goodbye:

I'm not a little impressed by this piece of wonderful
tunecraft. I wish they had
written and recorded an entire album whilst in this
Beatlesque modality. I listened to it 3 times back to back. Quite an impressive
work of Beatle disciplism.
They took the Fab Four essence to heart and created
this gem. I bet Jeff Lynn was jealous of this band's
full capabilities in Beatlecraft when he first
heard the song. HeeHee

It's almost shmaltzy in its Beatles references. It's even got that Penny Lane-like touch of trumpet at the end. I iked it when the video used to come on, though. There must have been widespread Beatles nostalgia at that time.

I think its a well crafted tune. Didn't notice much Beatles influence really, except maybe the way the drummer tempoed the toms.
Ringo did that quite a bit, where the bam came immediately behind a lyric component.
Am i clear? Doubt it. I don't explain musical impressions well. Anyone heard from Zippy lately? I hope he's alright. He's a bit naive in
Some ways and could be harmed by
those with evilment on their mind.
But yes, fine catchy little song worthy of
most earholes time. Like to hear more
songs from these 80s notables in the same
vein as this one. Nice and decent length too.
No Beatle 3 minute gem. Little over 5 minutes.
Been 19 years since you bought it, Walrus,
what is your current unbiased opinion on
the tune?

I fear the worst about Zippy. He was keeping this group alive and posting every day. Suddenly, his posts stopped, and he hasn't been heard from.

Same here. From time to time he would post about spending time in the hospital with serious health issues. I just hope ol Jeff is well and just can't access the internet like he's always been able. He's sometimes prone to pop off on something someone posts to him and becomes defensive, often
replying with a puzzling non sequitur. I hope he didn't go off on the wrong person out on the mean streets of where ever he may be roaming these days.
May Instant Karma strike down anyone who threatens my vulnerable amigo. Zippy, where have you gone?
