First, I apologize for the off-topic post (though I did label it as
such). However, what with Clapton's close relationship with George
Harrison it's not entirely off-topic. Also, I didn't know where else
to ask my question and from being a long time lurker in this group I
am always amazed at the wide range of knowledge the posters here have
about all of R&R, not just the Beatles.

Anyway, I was watching Biography last night. Clapton was the subject.
Bobby Whitlock (keyboard player for Derek and the Dominos) provided a
lot of the commentary. At one point he mentioned something about a
fight that erupted between EC and Jim Gordon (drummer for D&tD) that
ended with EC telling JG that he would never play with him again,
effectively ending D&tD. I was wondering if anyone here knows what the
nature of the fight between the two was all about.

I have also heard it said that in EC's various inductions into the R&R
Hall of fame he has mentioned/thanked many people but has never
mention JG. Was this because of the fight between them or more to do
with EC feeling it was inappropriate or in bad taste to even bring up
JG after the latter was imprisoned for murdering his own mother?

TIA,
Jack

Here's a quote from Bobby Whitlock that talks a little more about that
incident:

"We never had a falling out ..ever. " We remain friends to this day
...that whole thing was a breakdown between Eric and Jim Gordon . Jim
suggested that he let him tune his guitar for him , he was having a
difficult time getting his guitar in tune...this infuriated Eric ..he
stood up slammed his guitar down and said I will never play with you
again ..ever , and stormed out . I (Bobby ) looked up at Carl and said
"Thats that ...I could not believe it ." BW"

Obviously, the breakup was not really about tuning a guitar, but that
may have been the last straw. Apparently Gordon was very hard to get
along with, and of course, we know what eventually happened to him.

Thank you. That's the answer I was looking for. Much obliged.

From reading his autobio I got the impression that E.C. is not the
easiest man to get along with either and this story doesn't refute
that much.

Anyway I wantd to just say hi to the o.p. and that I'm a fellow
cruciverbalism enthusiast.

I remember reading in an interview with Clapton in the Q magazine (or maybe Mojo?) that one day Clapton remarked something about Gordon's playing, he wanted him to play something different and Gordon got up and took Eric's guitar and said "well, why don't you add so and so in here" and started playing and Eric then said:"He could play it better than I could!" and after that he left. Eric was always a big diva.

Thank you for responding to a post I made just over eight (!) years
ago. I'm not being sarcastic. I had never heard this story before and
was glad to do so now. Usenet in general, and r.m.b in particular, may
be on life support but sometimes it's just amazing.
