Tulsa Sound icon Leon Russell has been hospitalized for brain surgery,
sources confirmed with the Tulsa World. According to his Web site,
leonrussellrecords.com, he is in good condition and should be home in
a few days.
"Leon is recovering after successful surgery on Monday to relieve a
chronic condition," the Web site announced late Tuesday. "He is doing
fine and resting in the hospital in good condition. He is expected to
be released from the hospital in a few days."
His plans to record an album with Elton John, Bernie Taupin and T-Bone
Burnett are also still a go, the site says.
"Leon is looking forward to beginning studio recording sessions during
the last half of this month through February with Elton John, Bernie
Taupin and T-Bone Burnett. He and his band will resume touring at the
beginning of March."
The World first learned of Russell's hospitalization from Steve
Ripley's "Oklahoma Rock and Roll with Steve Ripley" Facebook page.
That page was updated early Tuesday. "Uncle Leon spent 5 hours in
surgery yesterday. I trust the Oklahoma Rock and Roll family will keep
Leon in their hearts and minds for the next few days," wrote family
friend Steve Ripley on his "Oklahoma Rock and Roll with Steve Ripley"
fan site on the Facebook social networking site.
Russell was hospitalized for surgery for a brain fluid leak and
treatment for heart failure and pneumonia, reportedly in California.
Also, the often-on-tour musician has canceled a string of upcoming
club dates, confirmed Rick Booth, who has booked several club-size
shows for Russell.
Brian Lee, a longtime Tulsa keyboardist and part of Russell's touring
band, confirmed that Russell underwent surgery on Monday and is
recuperating.
"He did get through the surgery, and at this point we're just praying
for a smooth and quick recovery," Lee said via phone during a Tuesday
interview with the Tulsa World.
Lee also said a string of shows in North Carolina and along the East
Coast have been canceled.
Russell recently announced tour dates that should roll through Osage
Million Dollar Elm on April 24, tour industry tracker Pollstar Pro
reported. He is also to perform at the Norman Music Festival on April
25 on Norman's Main Street.
In 2009, Elton John let slip on Elvis Costello's talk show that he had
tentative plans to record with Russell on a new album, to be produced
by T-Bone Burnett.
Claude Russell Bridges was born April 2, 1942, in Lawton. He is
well-known professionally as an American pianist, guitarist,
songwriter and singer and a founder of the Tulsa Sound, a bluesy blend
of country, rock, folk and rockabilly.
He has toured, recorded, produced and performed with a litany of
famous artists over the years, including everyone from Eric Clapton to
Bob Dylan, Ricky Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Phil Spector, Tom Petty, The
Beach Boys, Badfinger, The Byrds, the Beach Boys, B.B. King, George
Harrison and more.
Through the 1960s and 70s, Russell owned the famous Church Recording
Studio on Third Street in Tulsa, which has hosted many famous
musicians, including members of the Beatles.

Get well Leon.
With George Harrison and friends:
Maybe they removed the blockage that has hobbled his creativity for
the last 30 years... I saw him a couple of years back. Worst act I've
ever seen, excepting for David Peel and Imagine (his next to worthless
band at the time)

According to the early copies of the running order for The Concert For
George, Leon Russell was due to appear. These are shown in the Genesis
book about the show.
Does anyone know why he didn't?
