BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Terry Melcher, a record producer and songwriter
who aided the careers of Ry Cooder, the Byrds and the Beach Boys, has
died, his publicist announced Saturday. He was 62.
Melcher, the son of actress Doris Day, died Friday night at his Beverly
Hills home after a long battle with melanoma.
Melcher co-wrote the hit song "Kokomo" for the Beach Boys. The song was
used in the movie "Cocktail" and was nominated for a Golden Globe in
1988 for best original song. He also performed on the Beach Boys album
"Pet Sounds."
In the early 1960s, Melcher began singing as a solo act and later paired
with future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston to form the group Bruce & Terry.
The pair had several hits, then went on to form the Rip Chords, which
recorded the 1964 hit "Hey, Little Cobra."
In the mid-1960s, Melcher joined Columbia Records as a producer. Working
with the Byrds, he produced their top-selling version of Bob Dylan's
"Mr. Tambourine Man" and other hits, including "Turn, Turn, Turn."
Melcher also produced hit songs for Paul Revere and the Raiders and
worked with Gram Parsons, the Mamas and the Papas, and Ry Cooder.
He served as the executive producer of his mother's CBS show, "The Doris
Day Show," from 1968 to 1972 and co-produced her mid-1980s show, "Doris
Day's Best Friends."
Melcher also helped run his mother's charitable activities, including
the Doris Day Animal Foundation.
In 1969, his name became linked with the grisly Charles Manson murders.
Melcher once rented the home where actress Sharon Tate and a group of
her friends were murdered by Manson followers. Rumors circulated that
Melcher, who knew Manson, was the real target because he had turned
Manson down for a record contract.
Los Angeles police discounted the rumors. Melcher had since moved to
Malibu, and police established that Manson knew of his new address.

In my book, "Rethinking John Lennon's Assassination...",
I portray Terry Melcher and Apple Publicist Derek Taylor
as probable FBI informants working as part of an ongoing FBI
program to destroy rock 'n' roll music, an effort that
had been in place since the birth of the genre in the
1950s. The objective of the Bureau's anti-rock'n'roll
campaign of the 1960s would be to taint the public's
perception of rock music and to put the fear of God into
rock stars who lived near Doris Day's L.A. home where Sharon
Tate and others were brutally murdered in 1969.
More investigation is certainly needed regarding the Manson
murders, but my research indicates that Charlie Manson and his
followers were probably patsies. It is possible, however, that
Manson was a paid government informant, similar to Lee Harvey
Oswald, although I do not believe Manson was an active
participant in a conspiracy to murder Tate, Folger, Frykowki,
Sebring, Parent, Hinman, and Leno and Rosemary LaBianca.
I suspect, however, that Manson's involvement with the FBI
may have been unknown or unclear to him, and instead he may
have been given assignments by Mob boss Frank Costello, who
supplied hit men for J. Edgar Hoover's personal team of
assassins. Manson has stated that he was acquainted with
Costello while serving time at The Federal Reformatory at
Chillicothe, Ohio.
Although Manson had spent years in and out of prisons, jails,
and reform schools prior to the gruesome Tate murders, he had
no history of committing violent crimes. The reason he was
incarcerated so often was because his mother had abandoned
him as a child, and he became a ward of the state. Violence
was never part of his make up. He mainly engaged in petty
larceny as a means of obtaining food and shelter. In fact,
his last six-year prison term at the Federal Penitentiary at
Terminal Island, San Pedro, California (from 1961 through
1967) was for cashing a government check worth $37.50.
Terry Melcher—the man who previously leased the house where
Roman Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate, and her four friends
were murdered—had been a recording producer in the early
days of Apple Publishing, a business created by the Beatles
which later evolved into Apple Records. Terry Melcher is
the son of actress Doris Day (real name, Doris Von Kappelhoff)
and Cincinnati trombonist Al Jorden. In 1951, Terry was
adopted by his mother's third husband, Marty Melcher.
Melcher became a successful producer for several Sixties
rock bands. He produced the first two albums by the renowned
Sixties rock group, the Byrds, plus Paul Revere and the
Raiders. He is also closely associated with the Beach
Boys and has written songs for them in recent years. In 1997
Kristofer Engelhardt published a book, "The Beatles Undercover,"
which revealed that Melcher had direct ties to the Beatles'
inner circle through Derek Taylor, publicist for the Beatles,
the Byrds, and the Beach Boys. In 1968, Melcher produced a
song for Grapefruit, a band backed by Lennon and McCartney
and signed to Apple Publishing by Terry Doran, a friend of
Brian Epstein (Beatles original manager). The following is
an excerpt from Engelhardt's book:

I understand what you mean, Michael. It's a shock to learn
that so many things we've been taught are lies. The media's
description of Charlie Manson and the notorious Tate murders
is yet another example of such deception.
It is widely known that Charlie Manson was a singer/songwriter/
musician trying to make it in the music business in the late
Sixties. It is also widely documented that Terry Melcher was
interested in Manson as a recording artist. During Manson's
trial, L.A. district attorney Vincent Bugliosi claimed Manson
hated Melcher for closing him out of the music business, and
subsequently sent his followers to kill the young record
producer. Years later, Manson described his feelings for
Melcher in positive terms in the 1986 book, Manson: In His
Own Words. The following is an excerpt:
===== quote on =====
Terry Melcher is the son of Doris Day and head of a recording
studio. More than anyone else, he had it in his hand to pick
us up and put us in the music world. He did give us a little
attention, a lot more than was brought out during the trials
and in other books that have been written. He and [Gregg]
Jacobson [Melcher's colleague in the music business] arranged
a couple of recording sessions and, in looking back, I guess
the girls and I blew it. Melcher and the people who were doing
the session had their ideas of how they wanted the recording
done, the girls and I had our idea. We clashed, and nothing
was accomplished, but that relationship lasted right up until
August of 1969 [when the Tate murders occurred].
As long as I was still trying to get into a music career,
Melcher and Dennis [Wilson, drummer for the Beach Boys] and
Jacobson were people I liked being around. When things were
really desperate out at the ranch and some money was needed,
Melcher was a touch. For the prosecuting attorney to say I
sent those kids after Melcher is total bullshit. Why would I?
He gave me money, lent us his car and credit card. Melcher
was all right and I had no bad feelings for him.

If you're saying Charlie Manson was crazy, how sane was Terry
Melcher to seriously consider giving Manson a recording
contract? How sane was Beach Boy drummer Dennis Wilson to
finance Manson and be friends with the so-called Manson Family?
How sane were the other Beach Boys to record one of Manson's songs
("Never Learn Not to Love"; originally titled "Cease to Exist"),
included on the Beach Boys' 20/20 album? How sane was Brian
Wilson to allow Manson to record at his home studio?
How sane was Arthur Lee (founder of the rock group, Love)
to befriend guitarist Bobby Beausoleil, a member of the so-call
Manson Family who was later convicted of torturing and murdering
Gary Hinman? If Manson was nuts, a lot of people in the LA
music scene were nuts as well, including, but not limited
to the late Terry Melcher and his partner, Gregg Jacobson.

I do not know whether Terry Melcher was aware that
Tate, Folger, Frykowki, Sebring, Parent, Hinman, and
Leno and Rosemary LaBianca would be brutally murdered
prior to the tragic events. I suspsect he was not, but
it is clear that Melcher's involvement with Manson was
more than a casual interest as many have claimed.
As I stated before, many others besides Manson were
interested in Manson's talents. There was Beach Boy
drummer Dennis Wilson who financed Manson and became
friends with the so-called Manson Family. In fact
the Beach Boys recorded one of Manson's songs
("Never Learn Not to Love"; originally titled "Cease
to Exist"), included on the Beach Boys' 20/20 album.
Brian Wilson allowed Manson to record at his home
studio. Arthur Lee (founder of the rock group, Love)
befriended guitarist Bobby Beausoleil, a member of the
so-called Manson Family who was later convicted of
torturing and murdering Gary Hinman. Beausoleil was
a rhythm guitarist in "The Grass Roots", an earlier
iteration of Lee's band. (NOTE: Grass Roots is not
the same group who had the hit, "Midnight Confessions.")
A lot of people in the LA music scene were interested
in Manson, including, but not limited to the late

"As a lyricist, Arthur Lee has always had an unfathomable talent for
exposing life’s contradictions. After all, he named his band Love,
then went on to debunk the Summer of Love’s myth of peaceful
coexistence with Forever Changes, which would turn out to be an
ominous premonitory gaze into the grim future of Tinseltown two years

When Lee assembled the original Love in 1965, Bobby BeauSoleil
auditioned for the rhythm guitar slot. But “Bummer Bob,” a Manson
acolyte, couldn’t compete with Bryan MacLean’s crisp, melodic chord
progressions and folk picking. BeauSoleil, the inspiration for Forever
Changes’ “Bummer in the Summer,” was imprisoned for murdering a
Topanga Canyon acquaintance shortly before Manson’s Cielo Drive

I'm not sure that Beausoleil was the inspiration for
Forever Changes since, according to my research, the
album was released in Feb. 1968, but BeauSoleil had
played in Lee's band in 1965. In addition, Byron
MacLean was considered by many to be a musical
genius, so I would tend to give him more credit for
Forever Changes than Beausoleil.
In my book (Rethinking John Lennon's Assassination...),
I quote passages from an interesting book about Arthur
Lee entitled, "Arthur Lee: Alone Again Or," written by
veteran rock journalist Barney Hoskyns, published by
Mojo Books, Copyright 2001 by the author, ISBN 1841950855.
There aren't many books about Arthur Lee and Love,
even less about Bobby Beausoleil; but Hoskyns'
book is a real gem. Hoskyns has quite a resume
as a rock journalist, having written for Rolling
Stone, Harper's Bazar, Spin, The Guardian, the
Independent, was US Bureau Chief at MOJO Magazine,
and is presently editor of Rock's Backpages website:
http://www.rocksbackpages.com/
The following is an excerpt from Hoskyns' book
where Hoskyns quotes Bobby Beausoleil describing
how he played several gigs with Arthur Lee's band,
but was replaced by Byron MacLean because of
MacLean's business connections with the Byrds:
==== [quote on] ====
[Byron] MacLean said that the band he saw was "a
black version of folk-rock." He told Lee he'd cut
off his arm to join. Lee acceded to MacLean's wishes,
but only after a few gigs with another serious
contender: future Manson Family murderer Bobby
Beausoleil, who would go on to form his own band,
The Chamber Orkustra, up in San Francisco (and,
later still, compose the music for Kenneth Anger's
infamous Lucifer Rising). "He was known as ‘Bummer
Bob'," recalled Arthur. "I never had anything
to do with him other than auditioning him. People
told me Manson used to come to my shows. I never
knew that.
Beausoleil remembered seeing The Grass Roots support
The Byrds, and he was desperate to join a band. "One
day I went to Arthur Lee and I told him I thought
he needed a rhythm guitar player in the band," he
remembered. "They were getting ready to play a gig
at a place called the Brave New World. It was a gay
bar, although they didn't know it at the time--or
at least I didn't. But it was a gig that Arthur
didn't expect to be attended that well, so he decided
I could get on stage with them. Arthur saw the
potential in having some pretty white guy in the
band, apart from the musical potential.
The first couple of nights we played there, it was
all gay. After I played a few sets over a few evenings,
I went up on the Strip one night on our break. I just
got tired of the situation--we were all tired of it,
we wanted an audience. So I went out on Sunset Strip
and told everybody; this is where it's happening, and
I gave out directions to the Brave New World. By the
time I got back to the club, people were already
starting to arrive, and between that set and the next,
the place was packed.
Bobby Beausoleil was in The Grass Roots when the Watts
race riots erupted in south-central LA in August
1965--riots which must have seemed particularly pertinent
to a "two-tone" band like the Roots. "We actually went
into Watts, because Arthur wanted to check on his mom,"
recalled Beausoleil. "We all drove down into there, and
it was really strange. There were military vehicles,
police out everywhere."
"Bummer Bob" maintained that when he took a quick trip
up to San Francisco, Lee brought in MacLean. "I went back
down to LA and found out that I'd been replaced in the
band, and the reason was that I was too young to play in
many of the clubs legally." MacLean, he said, took
advantage of his absence. Even so, Beausoleil made his
mark; according to him, the band's name change was
directly inspired by his own nickname, Cupid. "Just before
I went back to San Francisco I was at Ben Frank's on the
Strip, where the colorful people used to go for coffee
and cake and hang out. I was there by myself, getting
ready to leave, and...Arthur came in and sat down with me.
He told me that he'd decided to rename the band Love in
honor of me, alluding to the Cupid nickname that I had.
I felt honored. It kind of healed the hurt feelings."(1)
==== [quote off] ====
Manson's prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi corroborated that
Beausoleil's nickname was in fact "Cupid" in Bugliosi's
famous book, "Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson
Murders."(2)

Great counter-argument. :-) But seriously, I do not know
if Terry Melcher had prior knowledge of the murders of
Tate, Folger, Frykowki, Sebring, Parent, Hinman, and
Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, but my gut feeling is he
did not. Nevertheless, it looks like something shady was
going on and Melcher was in the middle of it. Melcher
attempted to cover up his involvement with Charlie
Manson, as many others did. Obviously Bobby Beausoleil
was an up-and-coming rock star, well-known in the LA
music scene. This fact alone reinforces my belief that
the Tate-murders was an intelligence operation designed
to discredit rock music.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check it out, although
I'm not sure what it means. We've already established that
Bobby Beausoleil was a rising rock star, so it makes sense
that he might have starred in a movie or two prior to the
Tate murders. And Jay Sebring (one of Sharon Tate's house
guest, also murdered) was a famous Hollywood hairstylist.
In fact, it was Sebring who cut Doors singer Jim Morrison's
hair to look like Alexander the Great (at Jim's request),
so there's no surprise that Sebring would appear in a
Hollywood movie, along with other rock stars like
Frank Zappa. Still, it's interesting nonetheless.

But as I stated before, I suspect Melcher did not have
prior knowledge of the ensuing murders of Sharon
Tate et al, although he was probably doing favors
for people he knew were capable of terrible things,
people other than Charlie Manson, that is.
