Does anyone recall an obviously tanked Ringo Starr showing up on the
U.S. syndicated John Davidson Show circa 1980/81? I have a vivid
memory of it, but I'd like to see video of the event, or at least get
other people's feedback as proof that I'm not imagining the whole
affair.

From what I remember, Ringo was making the rounds to promote Caveman
at the time, and had been scheduled to appear on the relatively new
John Davidson Show. For those of you who might not remember, or
weren't in the U.S. at the time, Davidson was a squeeky clean, blow-
dried entertainer who did the talk show/game show/Love Boat circuit in
the late 1970's. He had just been granted his own day-time talk show
as a replacement for the very popular Mike Douglas Show.

Apparently, although he'd agreed to appear on the program, Ringo, with
a few drinks in him, did not take kindly to Davidson, and was rather
hostile during his appearance. I was a kid at the time, but if my
memory is correct, Starr seemed to feel that Davidson was responsible
for Mike Douglas no longer having his own show. The incident, for its
time, was so bizarre, that I remember John Davidson actually doing
somewhat of a disclaimer at the beginning of the program, perhaps to
apologize for Ringo's behavior.

Does anyone else remember this?

No, but it sounds interesting.

Nothing on YouTube but I did find the following:

"...in the early 1980's, he appeared inebriated on television
interviews. On one such occasion, the show's host, John Davidson,
walked off the set.

'While they were convincing him to come back,' Mr. Starr recalled, 'I
was in my dressing room having a few more cognacs.'"

10 Most Embarrassing Moments in Beatles History

4. Ringo Starr appearing on "The John Davidson Show" drunk and
hostile. Low point: Davidson asking Starr what his favorite color is
(an asinine question, anyway) and Starr spitting back, "I don't like
brown!" Davidson was dressed head-to-toe in brown. (1980)

"More recently on his own talk show, [John Davidson] stopped the tape
and walked out on guest Ringo Starr when the ex-Beatle started
answering his questions in childish gibberish. 'I got angry. I'm not
interested in doing a nonsense show,' declared Davidson."

To state the obvious, I'd love to see video of this!

I don't remember that, though I do seem to remember hearing about it.
I saw him on the Tonight Show promoting Caveman, and he may have had a
few then too. He was very surly as I recall. Good thing he got
clean, or he may have completed a trio with Keith Moon and John
Bonham.

1980?, I was under the impression that his drinking problems had been
later than that. But then, John talked about drinking heavily with
him and someone else, during his "los weekend"... I think.
