Todd Rundgren has mentioned that they hired the singer from his first
band, Nazz, because Stewkey sounded like John Lennon. I don't really
hear much of that, but they made a few great records, like "Forget All

The definitive Lennon with The Beatles sound-alike song: "Lies," #20 US
Billboard for The Knickerbockers, early 1966.

But, I like this instrumental version by The Ventures better, with the
inimitable Noke Edwards handling lead duties:

My solo, acoustic, instrumental version of "I'm Happy Just To Dance With
You;" #95 US Billboard for The Beatles, 1964--flip side of the 45rpm single,
"I'll Cry Instead," which rose to #20 US Billboard, 1964

Remember You're a Girl by the Kaiser Chiefs is a pleasant if
unremarkable throwaway album track that has the feel of a solo John song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtr03zKzoFU

Apparently at an early stage of recording they realised it was sounding
a little Lennon-esque, and just went with it.

I don't consider that to be "disco", but I guess I can see why you
might think of it that way. It sound kind of ELO-ish to me. That whole
album is really good. A Beatles pastiche, for sure. I see the have
another album. I bet it's good, but the CD must be rare because it's on
amazon.com for $148.59!

I think "My Before and After" is such and incredible take on The
Beatles. The song itself is very original and doesn't really resemble
any specific Beatles song, but the production is totally Revolver. I
just dig the song itself - the rest is icing that makes it all the more
delicious.

I have that Future Clouds and Radar album, too. It's excellent, but I
like the Cotton Mather "Kon Tiki" album more.

I don't know much about the db's, but I have a few things by Holsapple.
One album I love is "Better Day" by Continental Drifters, which is him,
Susan Cowsill from the Cowsills and Vicki Peterson from The Bangles.
Chock full of great songs and performances.

IMO Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight is Lennonish. It has that echo; the arrangement sounds simple and stripped down like John Lennon Plastic Ono Band.

influenced by Lennon. First time I heard the entire album,

That could be said for a lot of those 'new wave' bands like Squeeze and
The Knack. The Knack wore their love for the Beatles on their

were... Somewhere in Hoboken.. Didn't like them at all :) But, I was a

I only heard the Knack radio hits and a few others, but I never really
saw much resemblance between them and The Beatles. Or rather, I *saw* a
resemblance in their presentation - the suits, the album cover, album
title - but I never heard much in common between their musics. It
seemed to be more of a marketing strategy than a musical kinship.

No doubt they were Beatles fans, but they didn't sound very Beatle-y to

Well, when you mentioned the DB's... It reminded me of many of the other
new wave bands that went out of their ways to sound like Lennon/The
Beatles....

I mention the Knack, because it's obvious - they were out there with
Rickenbackers and skinny ties in 1980.. How can you NOT like them???? :)

Squeeze - while very innovative and unique, definitely used a few
Beatles tricks from what I remember.... It's been a while for me since I
really listened to East Side Story or any of the others, but... there
was something there..

And of course, there's The Rutles :)

You really should revisit... If you're a Beatles fan, you'll appreciate
what they did with it... Just find the first album and judge from there.
They were a bit more heavy, but, still, great songs and great
execution... I like the later albums as well - but - if the first
doesn't grab you, it's not worth trying any more...

I head the first album a few times way back when, when "My Sharona" was
a hit. I thought that song was a fun rocker, although I was a little
put off by the juvenile lyrics, but the rest of the album was pretty
good. I think I did appreciate them for what they were, a good -
rockin' little guitar band - but I didn't detect much of the
eclecticism that means "Beatles" to me. Also not much vocal harmonies
as I recall. But I'll give them another shot when I have a chance, or
another chance when I have a shot, whichever comes first.

I used to like the entire album more than I do now. It has
those juvenile lyrics: "I'd like to get inside her pants."
Something like that, and "My Sharona" is my least favorite
song on the album. Except for that song, it mostly has Beatles
written all over it. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned
"Cheap Trick." The song "Downed" sounds like the Beatles
of the 70's, had they carried on.

Argy Bargy was a great power pop album. East Side Story was their
classic, where they went beyond power pop or new wave. The genre
exercises might bother some, but if it's done well, I like that kind of
thing. When I listen to East Side Story, or the white album or
Sandinista, I get the impression that they were trying to throw in
everything they knew about music.

The dBs are a group that never really hit me as much as you'd think. I
enjoy them, I've liked some of Stamey's solo material and I saw several
solo shows by Holsapple in the 80s that were pretty good, but nothing
has clicked enough to make me say "I love this band."

Actually, if you mention them to me, you have an equal chance of hearing
me say "They did "Amplifier." That's a pretty good record." or "Oh yeah,
Amy Rigby's ex is their drummer." But they are one of those groups I'll
come back to every so often to see if I can figure out what I'm missing.

Here's one influenced by the Fabs (to my ears):

"What it Takes"

"There's No Tomorrow" by Squeeze:

Even has backwards sounds. :-)

And because someone mentioned Cotton Mather elsewhere, try out "Dr. No"
by Future Clouds and Radar:

A stretch, but I hear shades of Lennon in it. And the video even has a
Sea of Holes!

Thanks for their version and yours. They sound more like
the Monkees than the Beatles to me.

I love the sound of that Rickenbacker lead guitar on the Vacation tune.
It almost sounds like there is some chorus effect going on there, but
I'm sure there isn't. Are there any bands of fairly recent vintage where
the guitar(s) tone resembles it? We need a Retro-Rickenbacker-Revival.

That chorus-y effect results from pairs of strings on a 12-string being
slightly detuned from each other. And yeah, it's nice! (I've got a Ric 12)

12-string guitars make me melt - there's just something magic about
them. O how they ring and jangle!

One of my favorite artists, Aimee Mann, uses lots of 12-string
electrics, especially in her earlier days. Roger Mcguinn even plays on
her first album. Here's a couple of song from that that feature
prominent 12-string:

I've got my own 12-string acoustic and electric. Here's a song I
recorded with it recently with my occasional Beatles cover band, a
version of "If I Needed Someone":

Let's revive this old thread. What artists since this topic was posted
sound like John Lennon?

I had a listen and it doesn't sound like a Lennon song. Thanks for
posting it. Opinions vary.

Here's one I doubt anyone put in here...

LAURA - by Billy Joel. Billy was always a huge Beatle and Lennon fan. He was deliberately trying to do JL style here.

BTW - I saw him in concert last year- and the band performed A DAY IN THE LIFE. Absolutely awesome.

I agree, he's trying to cop Lennon's vocal style, but the song overall reminds me more of ELO.

ELO? I don't hear that.
