I must have been on an rmb hiatus, but I completely missed the demise
of Beatlefest, or at least is cause to bail on the name and reinvent
itself.

What came about? What are these 'conventions' like in terms of
content and value, and....they're not Trekkie like, are they....?

Due to whining from Apple, it is now Fest For Beatle Fans.

In my opinion, the first one was OK, and it was all down hill from there.

I very much agree. The first one was the best, with everyone only in
the grand ballroom... watching films together, judging the look-alike
contest, enjoying the tribute band. It took place only about five years
after the Beatles' breakup, I believe, so they weren't a distant memory
for anyone. Their spirit was definitely alive at that Beatlefest.
People just *looked* excited. It hasn't been the same ever since.

There was also that *slight* possibility, albeit ever so slight, that,
you know...

What the hell is the difference?

That George would walk in, take one look at me, sweep me off my feet and
take me away, on his dark horse, into the sunset. Yes, I know. :)

Has any Beatle ever showed up at one?

I've heard about McCartney being at one in disguise, but that might
have been a look-alike having fun.

I can't imagine a Beatle Fest where there would be a marked excitement
about the Beatles. The majority of music lovers today do not think
the Beatles count at all: all the many little punks. By comparison,
it should be magnificent.

Waaaaay back on 24-Sep-03 20:23:30, UsurperTom said this about Re: The Demise of Beatlefest:

Apple's board of directors [not the Beatles, not Neil Aspinall, etc. but the BOARD] apparently argued that the name "Beatlefest" could indicate that the Lapidos event is approved/endorsed by the Beatles, which it isn't. They asked Mark to change the name of the convention because of this. "Fest For Beatles Fans" was thought to be a much clearer indication that it's a fan convention and isn't run/endorsed by the Beatles or Apple or whatever. I overheard an attendee ask Mark why the name change this August, and he gave a very short but polite response that seemed to sort of evade the legalities that were really involved. he just said something along the lines of "Because by calling it 'The Fest For Beatles Fans' we send the message that this is something for the fans."

From what I've heard from pretty reliable sources [i.e. lawyers] Mark actually would have a case...he legally CAN use the name Beatlefest. That is, he could fight Apple for it in court and easily win...but being a major retail outlet that sells Beatles stuff -- and considering this is what Mark and Carol do to put clothes on the table and food on their backs -- it wouldn't be a good idea to piss off Apple, legal or not.

I believe that if he kept it Beatlefest, he (Mark) would have to pay Apple.
Mark is a cheap, money hungry prick. He wouldn't have it. Beyond all that might
be said, John couldn't stand him.

I beg to differ. I have been to the Chicago Beatlefest every year
since 94. Last year's Beatlefest was the worst for me. I became so
disinterested that I changed my flight to leave early Sunday morning.

However, this past August somebody (Lapido's?) must have been
listening to some feedback, because everything improved. They had the
best guests since Astrid was there. Liverpool improved with a very
good bassist/vocalist - they even brought out a sitar for NORWEGIAN
WOOD. They had better competition for the Battle of The Bands, the
singalongs rocked, hell even the food out in the lobby improved ! The
marketfest had new and different items.

The good thing is that there is still room for improvement. They need
to drop that antiquated wristband format. Expand, perhaps add a second
ballromm for Beatles movies that THEY DID NOT SHOW, including the
ANTHOLOGY DVDs. And I could not believe they did not show the Hard
Days Day tribute band DVD, which is hysterical.
