I am currently in possession of what I believe to be a rare vintage concert
poster. I was given this as a gift, the person who gave it to me doesn't
know anything of its history (unfortunately). However, I am suspicious that
it may be fake, since the date and place on the poster don't match with any
of the concert databases on the internet (that I have searched, anyway). The
poster has a picture of the Fab Four in the middle over a yellow background.
It reads:
Sid Bernstein Presents the Beatles in Person plus All Star Show
Shea Stadium Aug. 23, 1965 7:30 P.M.
All Seats Reserved: $4.50 5.00 5.75 phone 265-2280 for information
Tickets now at: Singer Shop Record Dept. Rockefeller Center Promenade,
49th - 50th Sts. on Fifth Ave.
In the bottom right corner is a (copyright symbol)1965. The poster is in
pretty good shape, especially for being that old, which also is cause for
suspicion. Anyway, out of the concerts listed for that year, the only one at
Shea Stadium was on August 15 (and one of the largest, with attendance of
57,000). There isn't even a show listed for August 23 on any of databases I
looked on. However, there seems to even be confusion about the details of
the other August shows.
http://mcbeatle.de/beatles/tour/tour1965_3.html shows that there were shows
on 8/15/65 and 8/16/65 at Shea Stadium with 57,000 visitors each. That site
also lists the show in Toronto on 8/17/65 as being 2 shows with 17,500
visitors each. Whereas
http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/ash/618/concerts.htm explicitly describes
1 show on 8/15/65 (55,600 visitors), and 2 shows on 8/17/65 *totalling*
18,000 visitors. I guess people's memories are a bit hazy from this period!
To get to the point (finally), could this poster be real? Did this show
happen?
Thanks for any info you can give me,
Jason Forbes
I don't have Mark Lewisohn's book right in front of me, so I can't
check those dates, but I wonder if it could be one of those fake
reprint posters you get at memorabilia stores and poster stores (like
at the mall). There are tons of Beatles and Grateful Dead posters, but
I've also seen Led Zeppelin and even crap like the Backstreet Boys.
They are done in the style of old 60s & 70s posters, sometimes with
psychadelic arrangements of colors like yellow, green, and pink. I
believe they are printed on a thicker cardboard stock.
My guess is that if the dates don't match up, it's just a fake novelty
item.
