On Bowie's Young Americans John performed on 2 songs. Fame, which he
co-wrote, as you said, and Across the Universe. This version of AtU
is very good; More electric and sans the "Jai Guru Deva" bits. John
played guitar, but didn't sing on AtU.
I believe Fame was written and recorded in one brief session.

According to Coleman's "Lennon,":
Starting in Mid-January, 1975, David Bowie asked John to help out on
the "Young Americans" album, I'm guessing at Record Plant, N.Y.C.. In
the studio John backed vocals on what he said was always one of his
favorite songs, "Across the Universe"; John also co-wrote, and played
on "Fame" with Bowie and guitarist Carlos Alomar. The song gave Bowie
his first number one U.S. hit. I think they were friends for a long
time, as well. Bowie's "Across the Universe" _is_ one of the better
cover versions, i.m.o. Other than what I've presented here, that's all
the facts I could dig up.

Um Jon? May I inquire as to which rock you have just crawled out from
under? EVERYBODY knows John Lennon co-wrote Fame and sang on the Young
Americans album. You must be a youngster yourself.

Hey Theresa,

Don't be so hard on the guy. He could be a new Bowie fan. I'm one
myslef. I'm 23, and the first I heard of Lennon having anything to do
with the YOUNG AMERICANS album was on here. You gotta learn somewhere
and sometime. Your crawling "out from under a rock" comment is a bit
rude, for him asking a simple question.

So, have you gotten over the fact that the GLASS SPIDER tour was TEN
years ago, yet?

Didn't you co-write *Flame*?

It was for the "Young Americans" album by Bowie, where he also did a cover
version of "Across the Universe" that John liked. I seem to recall (but
might be wrong) that John played guitar on that track. I know he played
guitar on "Fame". I've often tried to figure out if that's him doing the
high, quiet, little "fame" echo, but I can't quite tell.

Towards the end of the song, when all of the "fame fame fame"'s are
sung, John sings the middle "fames."

Well, the story is something like Lennon came in to one of the rehearsals
and they jammed and Alomar had this riff, and Lennon put in an "aim, aim,
aim" thing, and that's what gave Bowie the idea and the rest is
history...or something like that.

Yes... You can actually hear John singing a drawn-out "Fame" in the
background of the chorus. He sings at a lower pitch than you'd normally
expect to hear from him.

I always assumed that the little "funk chord" part was John's (the "Get
Back" chord, also used in the solo of "You Can't Do that", and "Long Tall
Sally"). The only spot where I really can tell it's John singing is the
first "Is it any wondaaaaaaahh......"

Yes, he sings on it and plays guitar. He sings the high "Fame" parts
throughout and the "Is it any wonder" parts, as well as co-writing....

John Lennon helped write and sang backup vocals on "Fame"... You can pick
him out if you listen carefully. But that's all I know :)

Lennon sings the parts in parenthesis (...)

Fame (fame), makes a man take things over
Fame (fame), lets him loose, hard to swallow
Fame (fame), puts you there where things are hollow
Fame (fame)

Fame, it's not your brain, it's just the flame
That burns your change to keep you insane (sane)
Fame (fame)

Fame-f-fame (fame)

Fame (fame), what you like is in the limo
Fame (fame), what you get is no tomorrow
Fame (fame), what you need you have to borrow
Fame (fame)

Fame-f-fame

Fame, "Nien! It's mine!" is just his line
To bind your time, it drives you to crime (crime)
Fame (fame)

(What's your name?)

Fame

(Could it be the best, could it be?)
(Really be, really, babe?)
(Could it be, my babe, could it babe?)
(Really, really?)

(Is it any wonder) I reject you first?
Fame, fame, fame, fame (fame)
(Is it any wonder) you are too cool to fool
Fame (fame)

Fame-f-fame

Fame, bully for you, chilly for me
Got to get a rain check on pain (pain)
(pain)

Fame x 24.....(fame)

(What's your name?)

Don't forget the "I read the news today oh boy" background vocal near the end of
"Young Americans"...

John Lennon said in a later interview that he couldn't remember that he
had anything to do with "Young Americans" (I think maybe they both were
under influence by some mysterious dru...)

He sang the falsetto response vocal "fame" and played guitar. H elater
said he was so loaded in this period that he didn't remember the session.
