A story for the holidays.....
BLACKPOOLJIMMY
involve returning to old customers....friends, after all these years.
This particular family hired me many years ago...new to the community
and buying their first house, they called me to paint, focusing on the
small room that would become their, (soon to be) son's. Job
done...everyone happy.
Several years later, their son growing, it was time for a
change...painted the same room. Decorated this time with the usual
clowns, balloons, kindergarten stuff.
Third trip, same room...son 11 years old. Turning into a bit of a wise
guy....but a nice all around kid.
My last trip there...got some Beatle and other music posters
up...games strew about, the usual teen. The parents are a bit
terrified though....at 18 he wants to join the Army...
...and last week he died. The Iraq war claimed his life.
The parents called me yesterday, not to paint, but grieve.
When I see the complaints about Afghanistan decisions taking too
long.....I hope they take longer and hopefully are wiser.
When I see Cheney smirk on T.V...nevermind.

That's a tough one; sorry to hear the terrible news.
I'm looking for an article in my files written in the (then) local
Allentown, PA, paper in the 1970s. It mentions James A. Michener and
his view that about every twenty or so years, the U.S. seems to get
involved in some kind of foreign war, where a lot of brave young men
die and an dreadful amount of folks get filthy rich.

I am so very sorry to hear this story. I hope you and your friends and
neighbors can heal somehow. This makes me think of the song
"Russians" by Sting, great antiwar song, and "Jimmy Neuman" by Tom
Paxton (or it may be called Wake Up Jimmy Neuman). By the way it is
very hard to find on the internet, but Tom Paxton did a song eons ago
called "Crazy John" comparing John Lennon to John the Baptist, at
least I believe that is what it is about. Great song, wonder if other
people have heard of it

That was a nice story (really), unfortunately with a bad ending.
The problem with waiting long for a decision is that soldiers are
dying while we await the decision. If the decision is to pull out,
then we just wasted a bunch of lives in the meantime. If we send more
troops, then we just wasted a bunch of lives in the meantime. As far
as Cheney, he can do what he wants...he's not in power and has no real
pull, still a free country.
