Rory Storm's real story

I recently ran into an old girlfriend who told me she lived with Rory
Storm in Amsterdam before he went back to England and died with his
mother. I see Wikipedia claims Rory's death was not a suicide, and I
believe everything I read on the internet.

Does anyone know the real story? Was Rory's music any good?

I don't think there are any bootlegs of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes
with Ringo on the skins lying around, so I could safely say that I
don't know. I do know that Rory was rejected from a record deal
because it was said his voice was too shaky. Ringo played tamborine or
some other percussion instrument to help his old mates out on the
artist test.

There may be.
In the very early 60's, Ringo along with the rest of Rory's group made a
recording in Hamburg. I believe it was "What me what I Said" - Ray Charles
song.
The Shellac disk may still exist in someone's closet and be worth a bit
because Ringo wants to buy it. Or at least a copy.

Safe to say that it wasn't, or he would have been signed by someone
during the British Invasion. If there was any way that the leader of
Ringo's old band could be made successful so that people could cash in
on it you can bet that it would have been done.

That last might be more a reflection of your failure to properly appreciate
Marc Bolan than anything else. It wouldn't be my favorite in the list, but I
prefer it to "Oh My My."

The first might be because the song reflects a seventies sense of humor
that, um, sucks.

My friend tells me that the first thing Rory did after meeting her was

Wow, you really don't have any sense of humor. Before I posted that, I
worried that you might take that comment seriously, but after reflection, I
gave you more credit than that.

Oops, my mistake.

Just as a note, suggesting Marc Bolan's presence on a song might be the
reason you don't like it isn't "awkwardly forcing discussion" when he really
is on the song. In fact, if a reference I make to an artist is forced, it's
most likely that I only mentioned the artist to push your buttons. I'm
telling you this because pushing your buttons is so easy that there's no
longer any entertainment value in it.

The trouble with Herman's Hermits is that they're a bit too lite. I want
to like them, but I can't. A few of their songs are kind of good, like
Can't You Hear My Heart Beat, or their version of Dandy.

Rory seems to have more serious credentials.

They evolved a lot over the years. In 1964, they were essentially an
undistinguished cover band who had a few good moments, mostly do to them
being given strong material, but by 1967, they were a reasonably strong
pop/rock band who were (on the evidence of Blaze and the singles of that
period) doing a decent job of keeping up with the changes that were going on
in music and were even coming up with the occasional strong original song.

The name probably doomed them, though.

> Rory seems to have more serious credentials.

He didn't have any credentials. He recorded fewer than a half dozen songs.
He probably could have beaten Herman's Hermits in a battle of the bands
(though Peter Noone was probably a better vocalist), but his group was still
nothing spectacular.

I just asked poisoned rose this in the Dylan newgroup where he has been
making really demented hate-filled attacks on me. I had previously asked
him to listen to what everyone has been telling him about his attacks.

Do you think there is anyone who enjoys reading poisoned rose's hate
posts? Is there anyone who hasn't grown tired of his neverending spews?
If poisoned rose has any supporters, I'd like to hear from them.

Thanks, Lookinglass.

Maybe I should try to find the humour in PR's relentless personal
attacks on me. I know there is a kind of humour that involves never
ending repetition. I remember a scene in a Steve Martin movie where he
shook sugar into something and he kept doing it over and over. After he
went on way too long, it actually seemed funny. Maybe I have to wait for
PR's hundred thousandth personal attack before me makes me laugh.

I am not as sure as you are that the *intention* is to offend. I do know
there are some here that deliberately wish to offend...you don't need any
guidelines to figure out which posters here at RMB choose to be offensive.

I think some of what you see as being *intentionally* offensive is just one
person's enthusiasm for the music...like myself. I am very effusive with
subjects that I feel passionately about. At times I have even been carried
away with that passion. But beyond the defensive retorts that are sometimes
issued as a result of what I feel are personal attacks (!), I do not post
here to be offensive. I do not pretend to know everything, and if I post
something that conveys that impression, it is an oversight on my part.

I am here to share and learn. I believe many here at RMB have that same
*intention*.

His singing is pretty bad . . . . very "warbly." I thought he'd be

And if someone makes an unkind remark, try to ignore it.

"really real" is a "he". His real name is Don Freeman. I remember him
from rec.music.dylan.

amen.

But so has all the Beatles' solo work.

It would be bad enough that they had to come on after the Beatles
exited the stage, but the Beatles' solo work is worse than anyone who
might be playing on stage beforehand.
