I'll just make a couple of observations:
The person programming this radio station must have a narrower music
interest than even Raja...
Jimi Hendrix is apparently the only black person who was recording on
vinyl during this era. It strikes me how segregated music tastes have
become as part of narrowcasting...
Top rated Deep Purple song is "My Woman from Tokyo"...hmmmm. How many
people voted?
I basically gave up listening to this music in 1978, when I discovered
jazz, and began revisitng it through my son, and have enjoyed much of
it after the palate cleansing. But if I listened to this station
regularly, I'd be fed up with it again in a matter of months.

But this list says more about the *listeners* rather than the program
manager. This can't be a complete list of the songs played on the
station...nor a complete surprise. That there is a distinct gap in
listener tastes today is not a surprise either. When was the last time
you saw a concert line-up like the ones we witnessed in the
60's...Santana, Richie Havens, Joe Cocker, Jefferson Airplane and The
Who all on one stage. Now music (and radio stations) are targeted to
specific demographics. And those stations are around for a few months
and then disappear.
I do agree with your opinion about Deep Purple though. :o)
I don't think the *youngsters* that voted this list are as well versed
in musical tastes as you and I. And I don't think you and I have the
time or the inclination to be voting our favorite top 100 list on a
radio station.

I don't think they're making old people like they used to, either.
Recently, I was talking to one of my students about music and she was
surprised that I was familiar with Amy Winehouse, yet in the 70s no one
would blink if people in their 40s or 50s were familiar with Linda Ronstadt.
From another perspective, I was surprised that she'd never heard of Dusty
Springfield until I realized that not many high school students of my
generation were all that familiar with Al Jolson or the Andrews sisters.
(It later turned out that she had heard Son of a Preacher Man before. Maybe
from Pulp Fiction, just as I probably knew the Andrew Sisters from an Abbott
and Costello movie or something.)
I once listened to a friend born in the early 1950s berate a woman
born in the late 1970s because she was unfamiliar with CSNY. When he
was done, I asked him to tell me all about Jimmie Lunceford. Blank
stare.
The Arranger
Well that's the trick, isn't it. What YOU know is not ALL there is to
know. There is a history that comes before you were born...and if you
are interested enough in a subject, you investigate that history. Not
to mention reading all the critiques and reviews and opinions about
any given subject. Some are mildly interested...some are seriously
interested...and then there is the *fringe* of society that LIVES for
nothing else BUT the subject of interest that is close to his/her
heart...Gollum-like...morphing into a (gasp!) scholar.
And the ability to discern the differences.
:o)
I can't stand people who give others a hard time..just cause they
know
something..and the other person doesn't. It's rude. I also admit
I have no idea who Jimmy Lunceford is. Just checked. Jazz Musician.
Hmmm.
Jeff
Not really. There must be more than 10 bands on that list ;-)
It's a typical "Classic Rock" top 100 list, I'm afraid. All the songs
that have been beaten to death!
> Jimi Hendrix is apparently the only black person who was recording on

Segregation is only a small part of it. We don't have listeners any
more, we have *specialists*.
I'm a stoner doom metal guy, personally ;-)
> Top rated Deep Purple song is "My Woman from Tokyo"...hmmmm. How many

If I had to pick a Deep Purple song, that would be my choice. Either
that or Highway Star. That's one of the few bands for which they
avoided the obvious cliche (Smoke On The Water, in this case).
And actually, the list has more Beatles songs than I'd have expected,
based on some of the CR stations I've heard. Count your blessings!
