I finally got to see the Cirque du Soleil show "LOVE" in Las Vegas a
few days ago. I enjoyed it a lot - there were many striking visual and
musical moments, and the set, lighting, and sound design effects were
fantastic. I've seen a couple of other Cirque du Soleil shows that were
better as acrobatic shows. LOVE had more "acting", miming, character
stuff, and less of the athletics. It could have used a bit more
trampoline action and less posing.

It wasn't the revelation I thought it would be, but I'm glad I saw it.
I do wonder how the younger audience members relate to it. All the
little audio and visual references mean something to me, but what about
them? The guy next to me spent most of the show texting. I don't think
he was that into the show.

Haven't read the Time article. But it seems like typical generational
discourse.

I had been wondering about that, too. The people I was with seemed to
think LOVE was only a couple of years old, but I knew it was a lot
older. I looked it up, and it opened in Vegas in 2006. 7 years old!

They probably miss out on the nuances, but I believe younger audiences
respond positively to The Beatles in general.

You wouldn't know it from listening to the snobs. But the Across the
Universe film went over pretty well with younger audiences.

My sister took her high-school age daughter to Ringo's show a couple
of years ago. They both thought the music was superb. You're talking
about veteran musicians.

They also have that guitar game with the Beatles, so her kids are
really familiar with the music anyway.

Living in So Cal, which is close to Vegas, I viewed it in within 3
months of it's Premier Performance, Not a bad seat in the house
either. And there's so many high rollers at The Mirage, that sellouts
are guaranteed for most every show, with tickets averaging 100 bucks
or so. It's indeed a splendid and lengthy mashup of Beatles classics
which, by now, I feel could use an alteration of songs/dance
sequences, just to bring back those millions of us who've already paid
witness to the original show. Also, it's time by now, to DVD the
original show rather than using one's imagination to the the CD, just
to give the masses who can't get there, a more realistic view of

Should be getting the DVD-Audio of Love soon.
Didn't like the CD, but read somewhere that you have to hear the 5.1
because songs appear in different speakers and music is travelling
around them.
DVD-Audio should also include conventional DVD-Video with 5.1 in DTS
and/or Dolby.

"Love" does have much less acrobatics than the typical Cirque du
Soliel show, probably because it uses prerecorded music. The more
acrobatic shows have live bands, allowing scenes to be stretched as
needed to fit with the flexible timing of the more difficult acts.

LOVE had a lot of posing, and the acrobatics were rather repetitive -
like the Lucy in the Sky character flying around the theater, creating
a beautiful image. Then she flew around again in the same way - then
again, for the whole song. The routines in the other Cirque shows
seemed to develop more. Maybe the recorded music had something to do
with it, as you suggest. There would be more give and take with a live
orchestra - they could hit the cues together, guided by the conductor.

In the live band shows the band follows the action. A tightrope or
trapeze act can't time themselves to prerecorded music, and when they
fall the music adjusts accordingly.

Personally, I've not jumped at the chance to see this. The thought of a bunch of double-jointed contortionists gyrating to Beatles' tunes that are presented in a way the Beatles did not initially intend them to be is not appealing to me. I saw a Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas once and the creep factor was set on high.

However....from what some of you are saying, maybe the circus act has been toned down somewhat and maybe hearing the Beatles' music over a fantastic sound system could be great, and maybe my own personal aversion to these mashes (I always considered as Beatles blasphemy) could be overcome as they might actually give a new perspective to the music. After all, wasn't it George Harrison's idea in the first place?

By the by -- I discovered that "Lunch" by The Rutles is up on on Youtube. Just so you know, it's an unauthorized knock-off of the "Love" CD, and it's as well done, if not superior, to what George Martin did with "Love", which shouldn't be surprising since over the course of making "All You Need Is Cash" and "Archaeology", Neil Innes actually wrote & recorded homages/parodies of several Beatles songs not once but twice, which in turn provides much more fertile sound-ground for creating mash-ups. thanks for the links. The only thing I don't like about the Savage

guitar. Perhaps it's a joke that I'm missing, though. Could be!

There's a bloke during "Mr Kite" on a trapeze high up at the top of the
theatre. He gets the trapeze going, and going, and then when it's going
round and round he lets go. So, he's unattached to anything, but moving
through the air in synch with the trapeze.

Disturbing.

When I saw it last month, my seat was in the last row of that section.
It was a good central position to see all the action, and there was a
row of rear surround speakers right behind my head - I had a fun
perspective of a lot of the isolated parts and effects.
