What's everybody doing?

I'm presently defrosting a lobster tail and steak that I will prepare
in a couple of hours. Then TV - and I want to see if Dick Clark makes
an appearance.

American Bandstand was strictly a local Philadelphia affair which we
picked up in Reading, sixty miles away, until it went national. I was
a big fan and had my favorite girl dancers. Carmen and Franna come to
mind.

Oh, and it's only bloody 70*. You have to go inland a few miles to get
warmer!

It's 36 in the DC area right now.

Early this morning my daughter's boyfriend's car was broken into -- the
passenger side window was smashed -- and his IPod stolen. This happened
right in my driveway. None of us heard a thing.

I've been preparing the victuals for tomorrow's feast. No plans for
tonight, maybe finish up the tune I've been working on or veg out in
front of the TV or both. My daughter and her boyfriend are going to a
party, but all the guests are spending the night there. Good idea. No
one wants to tempt fate.

My son was killed in a car accident that happened on New Year's Eve 20
years ago. Since then, the occasion hasn't been a positive one for me
but I try to keep the family traditions alive the following day.

Everyone! Be careful tonight if you're going out.

I lived a block away from where Dick Clark lived in Drexel Hill. My
parents went
down to Bandstand on 9th Street years ago.

How's the Japanese Pagoda? How's Al's "Diamond" Cabaret? I went one
night
when LaToya Jackson was there. She was booed off the stage. My buddy
from Mount
Penn dragged me there.

Tonight, listening to ELO "Out of The Blue", making Pollo Guisado and
drinking some Sangria.

Next up.....George's "Cloud Nine".

It's freezing rain right now, so we're "in" all night.

That's a bummer! I know how that feels cuz I've had my car ransacked
several times. Once down here when the windows were broken in my new
Civic eight years ago, but there was nothing to take!

Very sorry to hear that, Rich. When you lose a child, you've lost
your world. My father was killed in an automobile accident in 1968.
Our family life was chaotic for quite a while.

Wow! I guess it ran locally in Philadelphia for at least five years
before it went national.

Been to the Pagoda many times. When we were naughty kids, we hiked up
Mt. Penn a couple of times to the Pagoda and Skyline Drive where all
the lovers would go to park after the movies or whatever on Fridays
and Saturdays mainly.

http://www.readingpagoda.com/Home.html

We had "rubber hunts" to see who could find the most. Didn't pick 'em
up, of course. <*yuk*>

Been to Al's a few times, too, but I knew it better as "Beef and Beer"
back in the 1960s. Went through a couple of owners before Al took it
over.

Not a big wine drinker, but I do like Sangria. Enjoy!

My sweetie of 32 years (because we're easy-to-get-along-with peeps)
and I hunkered in all day. There was a plan to webcam party with
friends in Texas, but we chilled on that.

Been flipping between Stooges on A&E and MSNBC most of the day, hoping
Rachel Maddow was going to moderate tonight's festivities, but MSNBC
are now in their non-news crime rerun mode. No one at MSNBC has enough
joy to man up & roll in the new year?!?

So it's over to Megyn Kelly on FOX. That's alright by me.

We pigged on pizza and lasagna and will kick on some movie soon. Maybe
a Cagney, Edward G., or some real life Disney from the mid-sixties.

HNY to all at RMB...

I got so fed up with MSNBC (and some others) that I changed my Direct
TV package. Now I don't get anything except Headline News which
repeats itself every ninety minutes.

Don't get Fox.

I made my lobster tail and steak and inhaled it in about three
minutes.

Did the show American Dreams annoy you, with its casual approach to
facts? It was 1964 I believe when it went national, or left
Philadelphia, something I learned.

Champagne, hors d'oeuvre, Turner Classic Movies' "The Thin Man"
Marathon, and "The Apartment" shortly.

It's a low-key celebration. We're still worn out from the 49th
anniversary on Dec. 27, 2009 of the Beatles at Litherland Town Hall.

Dick Clark is supposed to make an appearance but we're still 1-1/2
hours away from watching the ball drop - even though it happened 1-1/2
hours ago.

It's a recent show. It's based on 1964-ish Philly. It revolves around
a teenage girl who winds up being on Bandstand.

I think globular was bothered by the accuracy of its portrayal of
'64-era Philly. Since I never lived there, I can't comment on that.

A very quiet New Years Eve...my wife and I baby-sat our grandson while
his mother(our daughter) went to a party. We watched about three
"Thin Man" movies on TCM. Ate some of RichL's chex mix. Wow, Powell
and Loy were wonderful in those films...my favorite being "After The
Thin Man" with a very young Jimmy Stewart in it.

I am so happy to see 2009 over...it was such a terrible year for me,
personally...a lot of death and illness...here's hoping 2010 is better
for all of us.

I'm with you, Marcus. This was a truly horrible year for us, too. We
went to our close friends' house last night. It was nice and subdued,
soft music playing, with the kids in another part of the house. We sat
and talked in a darkend room lit by only by tiny holiday lights and a
roaring fire. When the ball was dropping, I turned to my husband with
tears streaming down my face. I turned back to find my friend wishing
me a happy new year holding a pair of tissues for me.

Getting through the holidays has been rough every step of the way, but
I'm hoping that I can start to look forward now and that life will begin
to get brighter once again. Can't get no worse.

Wishing you and my friends at rmb a beautiful 2010. Enjoy special times
with those you love, and always keep them very close to your heart.

my gigs (after so many years together and having come to millions of

crowded NYC club (and home in the wee hours with all the drunks on the

through some rough times in our marriage just lately and are trying to
be extra-nice to and appreciative of each other now in our effort to
work things out and move forward, she surprised me by coming along,
being a great sport and having fun all night, I was proud to show her
off (she has lost 30 lbs. in about the last year, training, working
out and dieting strictly and looks ridiculously cute, hot and pretty,
way out of my league now!). She borrowed a beautiful outfit from
her trainer/friend, made sure all the kids had plans and were
accounted for for the night and got them to their various destinations
nice and early so we could leave; then drove into the city with me and
patiently waited around during set-up and sound-check/rehearsal, then
we went out for a sushi dinner with the bass player and drummer before
the show, she took pictures of the band all through our set and worked
her way through the crowd to be over at my side of the stage for a
midnight kiss, and then we rung in the new year right when we finally
got home at 4am. (And again when we woke up at 11! ;) )

Last couple weeks have been rocky but last night was the best NYE I've

Thanks! And I wish you the same.

I don't know about celebrating the New Year any longer. I mean, it
just indicates that *another* year has passed. Why would we celebrate
growing older?

I recall as a child and a teenager enjoying Guy Lombardo every NYE!

I was a party animal in my younger years and hosted a few NYE parties.
I even met my first wife at a NYE party I hosted for the 1967 New
Year. After I was married we would party hard, and I was the one who
would always lead the bunny-hop!

Getting tipsy and silly grew weary, though, and I became more
philosphical about the celebrating the event. Not just the passing
years and growing older but the craziness of the night and the dangers
associated with drinking and driving, etc.

A nice quiet dinner with family if they are around; then, watch Dick
Clark - or even go to bed before midnight has become my way of
celebrating. The event doesn't impress me much.

It's a bit ridiculous in that local TV in San Diego switched to NYC
and Times Square just before 9:00 PM to watch the ball drop.

Then they did it again three hours later.

Who's the hell plans this stuff? Daffy Duck?

It went for three seasons a few years ago. It was based in
Philadelphia, starting in 1963 and featured the show Bandstand with Dick
Clark seen coming and going.
There was a poster on a TV newsgroup, who apparently lived there in the
era, and would pick holes in every single episode.
It was quite dreadful with its fudging of history, and I think a factor
that went against it.
Bandstand stayed in Philadephia after 1964 on the show.
Many acts and songs were played months or years in advance.
Contemporary history just seemed too boring for the producers.
I tended to regard it as a kind of Waltons about the 60s. Both shows
were made around 40 years after they were based.
I await a 70s version.
