I thought, nice piano lick, okay song, but it will never make it to number 1.

It's one I would have skipped way back when. I didn't like the 50s musical style or the religious imagery. Today, I'm fine w/ it, though I wouldn't cite it as a favorite.

It's been claimed that the song is based on a song called "Bad Penny Blues" by Humphry Littleton. If that's true, McCartney certainly brought enough originality to his song (as the Beatles did w/ "Come Together" as far as distinguishing it from its inspiration in Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me").

I never heard the song as a 50’s musical style, or as something Elvis may have sang as McCartney put it.
But the song always came off to me as not being as good as most of their songs usually were. I think
the highest it got on the charts here was number 2? Just what I expected.

It was a catchy pop song. One you can sing along to the first time you hear it. Great melody. Great riff. Cool duo harmony. And as a piano guy, I had to learn to play it immediately.

To me, it's another Lennon / McCartney masterpiece. And this one really does earn that Lennon / McCartney authorship - as they wrote it and recorded it by themselves. Together. This song might be the last time they really worked on a song together.

Me, too. Great, great song! Maybe more a McCartney feature than a band
feature. Fantastic vocal (cool vocal affectation!) Love the B section
and its migration back to the verse key. Wonderful sax solo, much
better than the guitar solo that was attempted by George. Really
skillful songwriting and great, punchy production. Kudos to Ringo's
slammin' drums!

I've heard it said that this was Paul's homage to Fats Domino. Other
than it being a piano song, I don't really get it. But that certainly
reflects my relative ignorance of Fats's work more than anything.

For me, it was a great catchy song and I thought the vocal was strangely "different." I might've thought for a second it was Ringo (like some apparently did) but it was too good to be Ringo (sorry, Rings). I loved the ending too. I think Ringo overdubbed brushes on that one - or the other way around, very cool.

I never thought of the Fats Domino connection until I heard it mentioned YEARS later. I totally get it.

I always get a kick when McCartney's short (non-deep) answer when asked about the song is, "Gee, the only day of the week not mentioned in the song was Saturday, go figure." <paraphrased>

I was just saying I didn’t think the song would reach number 1. Was there a guitar solo attempted by George?
I haven’t heard it. Where can I hear it?

I think I got the connection right away the first time I heard it. Of course I'm old enough to remember Fats's performances in real time. The vocal affectation to me is Paul's effort to "do" Fats. More to the point, it's there in the phrasing of the piano part.

The lyrics to the song don't do much for me, but the music is awesome!

The vocal sounds like an Elvis homage.
