Which remastered box set and why?

I'm wondering about some aspects of the mono versus stereo remasters
box sets and thought some of you would have thoughts on this. Please
chime in!

Which box set are you getting and why? Setting aside the biggest
argument - that most were designed/recorded/mixed as mono - there seem
to be differences in number of CD's, add ones (graphics, videos),
possible tracks, and inclusiveness.

Since they are remasters, not remixes, will they be using the same
original master tapes to make BOTH box sets? It would be simpler if
they did. If not, will they use the original mono masters for the
mono set and whatever stereo masters for the stereo set? If so that
raises some issues. With the "old" recordings we got all of those
cases of different master tapes - different performances - used for
mono versus stereo so this vocal was flubbed here, this was spliced to
make it longer there, ....

Are the stereo remasters going to be (in some cases) different
performances from different masters than the mono? You'd think that it
would make sense to standardize things finally and use the masters
that have been deemed "best" for both sets and mix one mono and one
stereo. Just like they standardized the CD releases in '87 to the UK
ones, you'd think they'd take this opportunity to do the same with the
actual takes/mixes.

It's confusing enough that you get additional videos and 1965 stereo
mixes (e.g. RS) with the mono box, but then have to buy TS, LIB, and
AY separately as they were always stereo. And I guess these additional
3 disks don't fit into your cool mono box anyway. :-)

Basically I can't afford both sets and am thinking that I'll end up
with the mono set plus the additional 3 stereo (separate) CD's.

But wait, then there's the PM disc: Mono Masters (features all of the
mono tracks that appeared on singles, EPs, or never made it onto the
13 albums). So, what about the STEREO singles? Masters that were on
the original PM CD? Weren't there late singles that were released only
in stereo, but not on another UK collection, such as Old Brown Shoe
(or the single version of LIB)? Where do those appear? They're not
remastering the US Hey Jude disk so where does Old Brown Shoe go? Are
they doing 2 different PM disks - one with the stereo set that with
ALL the cuts (as is on the 1987 release), and one with the mono set
that is only mono cuts (and where are the other tracks - You Know My
Name? How can I live with out that one?)?

Oh, and the mono is a "limited edition" - nicer booklet and graphics???

Oy... it gives me a headache. Anyone have any comments about this?
Surely it must be simpler than what I've laid out here!

Best,

Joel

NO...it's not! You've iterated the *problem* quite well.

I'm going for both...I've been saving for a while and I spend NOTHING.
Peanut Butter and jelly sandiches for days...but it's a small price to
pay. It seems the MONO box will be scarce...I believe...so it will be
easier to get the stereo )box or individual CD) later on.

Both. Because I can.

I'm getting both, but if I was able to get only one, I would get the
stereo box, no question about it.

Mono, because it might be the first one to become harder to get and I
am anticipating the unheard mono material the most. I want to hear the
early albums in stereo also, especially A Hard Days Night, but really
all of the previously mono ones. I can only guess what kind of stereo
the first two albums have.

They would be ripping off fans if they used stereo masters to create
the mono CDs. They did this accidentally for the US mono Rubber Soul
CD a few years ago and actually recalled the CD when fans complained,
replacing it with the correct mono mix.

As you said, they standardized the catalog in 1987 and pissed off many
fans. This time they're doing it right.

The people who want the mono box aren't casual fans, so there will be
no confusion.

Or just get the stereo set.

I plan to get both, mono first. The pricing will prevent me from
getting both at the same time.

And the second part of the question was "and why?" (1) I don't listen
to the ones before Sgt. Pepper very often and there are good stereo
mixes for it and the later ones. In fact, ones after the White album
only have stereo mixes (2) not all of the albums are included in the
mono box, (3) the stereo box gives you more and cost less.

Neither -- I work in the newspaper industry.

Nuff said.
