Several Huron ministers gathered with 25 students, parents
and teachers from James Valley Christian School on Thursday to
help them deal with the death of two students in a Wednesday night
accident west of Huron.

Three people were killed and another was seriously injured
in the accident that occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Killed were drivers Tory Boomsma, 22, of Huron, and Liza
Tschetter, 17, of Carpenter, and 14-year-old Elli Glanzer of
Carpenter, who was a passenger in the Tschetter vehicle, according
to South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Ryan Gebauer.

Glanzer's 14-year-old cousin, Charlotte Glanzer, remained
in critical condition Thursday afternoon at Sioux Valley Hospital
in Sioux Falls. She was a passenger in Tschetter's vehicle.

Tschetter and her two younger passengers were all students
at JVCS in Huron. They had stopped at a farm implement dealer to
pick up a part and were on their way home, authorities said.

The three girls had been at a girls' basketball practice
prior to the accident, JVCS administrator Kevin Hofer said.

"I was pinch-hitting for coach (Kurt) Evans because he
had a meeting to go to," he said. "I coached for him, running
the practice for about an hour and 15 minutes.

"Little did I know that that would be my last encounter
with two delightful young ladies," Hofer said. "We're in a
state of shock now. The support from the pastoral staff and
the community, we really, really need that now.

"We really covet the community's prayers and letters of
encouragement to those four families," he added. "We'll still
be dealing with this six months from now. Just pray."

Hofer said more counseling will be conducted throughout
the school year to help students deal with the various stages
of grief.

Authorities said Boomsma, who was alone, was driving a
westbound car that collided with a pickup driven by Tschetter
about 10:30 p.m., when Tschetter apparently pulled out of the
implement dealership onto U.S. Highway 14.

Both vehicles ended up in the median of the highway. It
hasn't been determined if any of the victims were wearing seat
belts, or if alcohol or speed was a factor in the crash, Gebauer
said.

A double funeral for Tschetter and Glanzer will be held
at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bethesda Church in Huron.

Boomsma's funeral is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at First United
Methodist Church in Huron.

I spent less than 18 hours with Liza and Elli, but they carved
out a huge space in my heart. Their love for Jesus was positively
radiant.

After I took over the practice from Mr. Hofer at about 8:15,
Liza made an amazing 13 shots during the timed "rapid-fire" drill.
During our "11-man" drill, Elli's hustle was even more outstanding
than usual.

When practice ended at 10:00, we spent a few minutes talking
about our season goals and upcoming opponents. All the girls seemed
so upbeat and optimistic about the season.

I spoke Liza and Elli's last prayer.

Bawling a lot,
Kurt Evans

Kurt,
I'm praying for you. I know this is tough. I'm sort of going through
a "death" in my family right now. I need some serious prayer too.

In Christ's love and mine,
Jill
