I've always been curious about the origins and history of LF...such as where
did the group start out at and where is considered the groups current "home
base"?

It appears to me that the group has origins in Texas and perhaps the
South...Georgia, Louisiana? Is there a book(s) out on LF that I should know
about. Any information is appreciated.

They all live in the LA area. Kenny Gradney & Sam Clayton are from Louisiana,
Bill Payne is from Texas, Fred Tackett is from Arkansas, Shaun Murphy is from
Nebraska, Richie Hayward is from Ames, Iowa, Paul Barrere is (and Lowell
George was) from the LA area.

Lowell & Richie played together in the Factory (also Martin Kibbee), which
Frank Zappa produced. Bill Payne tried to join the Mothers about the time
that it was hinted that Lowell should leave; a secretary at the label hooked
Bill and Lowell up. Ray Estrada left the Mothers along with Lowell. Ray
thought they were going to be a big hit as Little Feat and went back to the
Mothers after a couple albums. So they needed a bass player; Kenny left
Delaney & Bonnie to join the Feat and brought Sam along to the audition. Paul
Barrere had tried out as bass player before (not sure when) and wasn't ready
at the time. Lowell asked him to try again later and it seems to have worked
out.

Fred Tackett was an old friend of Lowell's from the Mothers days. They met
Neon Park about the time he did the cover for the Mothers' Weasels Ripped My
Flesh, but didn't know that Lowell & Neon had a connection through the
Mothers.

Shaun Murphy was a backup singer for Eric Clapton & Bob Seger and later, the
Feat. She was doing backup vocals when Craig Fuller was with the band. When
Craig left, she stepped up to full time vocals.

No books - someone ought to write one! Anybody catching any mistakes/omissions
here, please let me know (or write the book) - this goes in the Feat FAQ!

Hoy, it was Roy! I loving learning the "history in the making" of Little
Feat......I remember thinking that they were a southern roots band. Then, in
96 before a show, we started talking to Jerry, the sound man, and he gave us
all kinds of great information. I remember first hearing about the
Feat-Zappa link then, and thinking how cool that was....big zappa fan
here!.......When I first had the pleasure of meeting the band, that was the
first thing I asked Bill about, and he told me about his moving to LA with
the hopes of playing with Zappa after hearing Uncle Meat........ I also have
a book about Zappa that mentions Lowell, and has a great - kinda obscure-
reference to Richie...." That day's issue of the Freep carried a four-stanza
"Tribute to Lenny" written by Animal J. Huxley (daughter of Aldous and
girlfriend of soon-to-be Factory drummer, Richie Hayward)." Isn't is true
that Zappa, or someone in the band came up with the name Little Feat by
commenting on Lowell's feet?! ;-) deb

Hoy!
According to FAQ on the official Little Feat home-page it's true.
Somebody from the mothers came up with it.
Go take a look!

Legend has it that Jimmy Carl Black, drummer for the Mothers of Invention,
came up with the name "Little Feat" in honor of Lowell's small feet.

They mostly live & work on their music in CA, but Shaun resides in Nashville,
TN, supposedly to get away from earthquakes - at least maybe someone was
joking about that since we had some monster twisters here last year. Her
husband Piero Mariani played percussion on Live From Neon Park & I believe
also on Under The Radar.

He supposedly said something more like "Look at those little f&@king feat!"
and the band shortened the statement a little.

By any chance, is Shaun's husband her connection to the Ala Carte
band? She's sang on one of their albums and appeared with them during
their recent hiatus.

I don't think so, Don. Is he listed as performing with them on any
recordings? Her latest appearance with A La Carte Brass was supposed to be
recorded for release. I did meet a young lady singer/songwriter here in
Nashville Monday who said she knew Piero - I didn't get a chance to ask any
more about him.

Did an Alta Vista search; same up with a bunch of rugby references...can't be
the same guy...
"La prima squadra italiana, l'US Milanese, venne costituita per iniziativa di
Piero Mariani nel 1909."
We'll just have to ask Shaun!

I seem to remember reading that Lowell moved the band to Baltimore at one
time; does anyone know when that happened, what his reasoning was? Did it
effect any changes (musically) in the band?
