KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons had harsh words for Carlos Santana
during a Thursday morning (June 11) interview on FOX5 News: Live In
Las Vegas.
When asked about plans for an upcoming KISS album, Simmons talked of
plans for a new tour and, out of nowhere, took a swipe at Hard Rock
headliner Santana.
"It's time for us to go out and show the little boys how the big boys
do it," the 59-year-old said. "I'm sick and tired of these bands like
Carlos Santana looking at his shoes and thinking that's a rock
concert."
"Get off the stage," Simmons said. (Watch video footage of Simmons
slamming Santana at FOX5 News.)
There has been an ongoing feud between and Simmons since 2005, when
Santana questioned Simmons' musical ability and labeled him "Las Vegas
entertainment."
Santana said he was appalled by the standard of Simmons' music and
insisted the rocker was hiding his lack of skill behind layers of
gothic clothing and black makeup.
Santana said, "He's not a musician, he's an entertainer. A musician is
(John) Coltrane, Bob Marley. KISS is Las Vegas entertainment, so he
wouldn't know what music is anyway. That's why he wears all that
stuff.
"A musician doesn't need the mask and the mascara so there's a
difference between an entertainer and a musician."
Writing on his official web site in response to Santana's comments,
Simmons said in an October 2005 posting, "Carlos Santana is cool. His
assessment? I have no problem with it. That's why they make menus in
restaurants. Not everyone likes the same meal. I wish him well."

Gene could only wish he were one-quarter the musician Santana is, or sold as
many albums as Santana has...

Gene's wig must be a little too tight these days. While I am not
really a fan of Santana's music, there is no denying that Carlos
Santana is a damn fine guitarist.
And People like AJ will believe it
Robin Trower is one hell of an axeman too
*Don't speak for me and you're wrong. I know Santana has sold more
albums than Gene has, but not more than KISS has. Comparing Santana
to Gene or KISS is like comparing apples and oranges. For my money I'd
rather see a KISS show any day of the week and I would rather have
Gene's house than Santana's.
*Yes.
As much as I adore Kiss (original lineup, non makeup lineup) Santana has
probably sold 10x more the records than Kiss has over the course of both
careers
Impossible. Research it.
AJ Santana has been around longer than Kiss has been
So has a ton of other great bands. Dude, Santana has never been as
big as KISS and there's no way in hell he has sold "10x more records
than KISS." I'm sure Santana has done very well, but 10x more than
KISS? No way.
he's sold a lot more records than Kiss has
Not that record sales mean a whole lot, but:
According to Santana.com, Santana has sold over 90 million albums.
Kissonline states that Kiss has sold over 80 million albums.
Those don't appear to be official numbers, but if they're fairly
accurate would represent worldwide sales. Given the sources, who
knows?
The RIAA website says that Kiss has sold 19 million certified units.
Santana? 43 million.
And as we all know from past arguments, that hasn't been updated in
years. Even if it were true, that's still not 10x more than KISS like
Steve claims.
So, in your infinite "wisdom" you're going to suggest that somehow, in
the supposed "years" that the RIAA hasn't updated it's certified sales
stats (LMAO), KISS has somehow, even without releasing any new
material, closed and surpassed the more than 50% gap between their
domestic sales and Santana's?
You "know" that KISS has sold more albums than Santana has. For fuck's
sake. Are you really that much of a sheep? LMFAO!
Read what you reply to and try to comprehend it. I know English isn't
your first language Arwen. Again, the subject is he sold 10 times
more than KISS like Steve claimed. And to bring back an old argument,
KISS hasn't paid to update their record sales in many years. They
still have ALIVE! listed as gold when we all know it went quadruple
platinum or more. Again, even if the numbers of what you posted were
true, he still hasn't sold *10 TIMES more than KISS.* Try again.

To get back to the original argument before Steve threw in his "10x"
comment.... has Santana sold more albums than Kiss? Yes. So what?

A peek at the answer is worth a thousand guesses.

Read what *you* post and try to comprehend it. Before Steve said
anything about 10x, you stated that you "knew" Kiss has sold more
records than Santana.
Also, given your rampant spelling errors - oh wait, those are all
typos, right? - you're in no position to lecture anyone about English,
professor.
Maybe, maybe not. We have nothing accurate to go by.
And I say that's probably true. Search all you want, there's nothing
accurate to go by, and while you're digging see if you can settle the
old argument here of who's solo album sold more.

Are you really that desperate for some Appalachian rattle snake? Damn
Troy, turn the Red Bitch porn website off and give this girl some
attention and get her off my nut sack.
Santana sold a LOT more records than Kiss did! Believe it.....
LOL THIS IS PRICELESS !
Prove it, you can't.
I will, somehow I will give me time
Others here have tried for years. You won't be able to prove it until
KISS pays the RIAA to update their sales. Until then, this argument
is moot.
lol you wont accept it when they do AJ
Sure I will. Good luck Steve and I hope you do find it. We will be
waiting.
> I've seen Kiss enough. I've only seen Santana once, back in the day,
> late 70s, Moonflower tour. I'd rather see/hear Santana.
Santana and Golden Earring was my third concert around 1974,
and tho not a 'visual stunner', was a great show. As a sidenote,
both Kiss and Aerosmith opened for them as well during this period.
Ted Nugent thinks he's all that and more. I cant stand the man. Not
because he's a republican but because he's a total wack job and he
thinks he knows it all
> Ted Nugent thinks he's all that and more. I cant stand the man. Not

Ted is in it for Ted. He loves playing the asshole, and is most
certainly only one of many in the rock world who is opinionated
and over the top.. matter of fact, there are few in the rock world
who aren't.. I think most of them are way past their prime and
just want to stay in the spotlight as long as possible. Nearly all
that fall under the 'classic rock' banner are just living on past
accomplishments. I don't know that I blame them for that, I think
it's just human nature, whether it's Brett Favre or Bret Michaels.
No one wants to feel washed up or left behind. And like
Evander Holyfield or Mike Tyson, many have blown their millions
and are just trying to suck out a few last bucks. Others I believe,
just can't do without the limelight... Kiss may fall under this category.
Nugent probably has money, so he may fit here as well.
Gene Simmons probably fits here as well in some way or another
As far as his "opinions", like you said he's more or less playing the
part of the asshole. Sure he probably believes what he spews, a little
too much at times, but he's simply catering to the low brow sector of
this country. He knows all he has to do is say something about our
right to bear arms and those "shoot first, ask questions later" nut
jobs will eat it up. I love how some people have gone as far to
declare him a "hero" when he in fact is a draft dodger. Huh.

It was interesting to hear him dedicating songs to his "blood
brothers" in the military when he dodged the draft and served in the
Amboy Dukes. This was when he opened for ZZ Top in 2004-ish.
