Amazon.com essential recording
The fact that Alive! is arguably Kiss's best album highlights the fact
that they are performers first, musicians second. There's nothing
wrong with that, especially when a live album sounds this good.
Stuffed to bursting with classic tracks, Alive!, originally released
in 1975, is a classic metal album. "Deuce," "Strutter," "Hotter than
Hell," "Black Diamond," "100,000 Years," and especially "Rock and Roll
All Nite" (probably the most well-known party song in
existence)--they're all here, and wonder of wonders, they still sound
fresh after all these years. The success of Kiss's 1996 tour shows
that they've still got plenty of fans; Alive! is one album no Kiss fan
should be without. --Genevieve Williams

My favorite album.

Do you want polite or do you want sincere?
Am I the only guy that likes Alive II more? :)
I can't get past the 'non-comic book era' tunes like Strutter - Black
Diamond and 100,000 years...
Except for parts of side four, A2 is my pick!

I like ALIVE II better also. A live show and studio songs in one
package. Plus it has my favorite Ace song on it, Rocket Ride.
I like Alive! Too bad it was doctored up so much

And that gateway picture... That's what made me want to be in a rock band! :)
Yeah I remember opening that vinyl up for the first time and seeing
that huge stage with all the fire and everything. That was awesome.
You never saw anyone with a huge stage like that back then. Then when
the needle hit Rocket Ride it blew me away. IMO, Rocket Ride was the
heaviest KISS song up to that point. I had never heard the term
"heavy metal" or "thrash" in 1977 but if someone had asked me what
those terms meant I would imagined it was the sound of Ace's guitar in
the opening of Rocket Ride. Plus I love how Gene and Ace look on the
cover of that album. The blood and sweat on Gene on that cover
clearly stated to me back then "we don't care what you think and we
are not a safe band." If that makes any sense.
Favorite "dubbed" KIZZ live recording.

I felt the same way when I heard "Crazy Nights" and "Forever".
Definitely not a safe band.

The cover to Alive looks so cheezy to me... For an 'arena' band - they're all
clumped together like they're on a sound stage..
Granted, the A2 cover is pretty bad, but, that gatefold :)

True, but the intent is there, and I love each member's poses on that
cover.

That gatefold should have been the cover for A2. But, again, the
intent was to open the gatefold and see that awesome shot!

I'm fine with Alive II. I think it was an attempt to further
establish the four characters...

KISS has always been a cartoon band to some extent. Their show is an
over the top parody of a rock concert, collecting elements from a
hundred different individual shows and combining them in a single
spectacle.
Not that there's anything wrong with that...
I embraced the whole comic book thing.. To me, when they took pictures
off the covers, and put drawings on - was when it started to click..
But, that's just me..

I got into KISS when I was 12 or 13, arguably a kid. And that was
back around 77 or 78. I guess I saw them as a kiddie band without
knowing it.
But to underscore your point, I've been dubbing a bunch of old videos
and came across a part of my boy when he was two or three banging on a
lunch box with a drumstick singing Rock & Roll all Nite...
