Why did the record company insist on putting flamingos on the front
cover of his first two albums rather than his face?

He was fat and ugly.

He had the misfortune of debuting one year before the onset of MTV and
THAT is what really curtailed his career!!!

Video killed the unsightly radio star, baby!!!

I thought they were annoying little kids the way they wore their
clothes backwards.

I wonder if he is well-aware of that? How does it make one feel as
they lie awake at night knowing
that they're career was limited due to his looks.

Interesting marketing decision though...."Let's put flamingos on the
cover". Were they force-feeding it to
females?

They should reposition the album with the original album cover of Fuck
Like A Beast (the one with the buzzsaw).

Because it would be uncomfortable to have flamingos sitting on one's
face?

That would have been an interesting record executive
meeting....."We've opted to have flamingos on the cover,
because that seems to suit his music more than a Michael Stivic look-a-
like, which will scare away our female
buyers who make up 93% of our listening audience."

It's similar to what RCA did in the mid-1960s. When they signed signed
Charley Pride, there was an obvious issue with his appearance (namely,
he was not melanin-deficient) that was seen to be a possible hindrance
to getting records sold in the country mainstream (read: Southeast US)
at the time. So they neglected to actually put his picture on the
first several LPs he recorded, called him "Country" Charley Pride and
didn't have him do many high-profile tours until his music was
accepted.

Turns out, when many of those supposed racists actually saw what he
looked like once his records broke and he was doing better tours, they
didn't care.

It's a case of record executives believing in their artists...but at
the same time understanding that many people will judge a book by its
cover no matter what they may say.

I had the unfortunate displeasure of seeing him live last year. Just
as fat and ugly in person. And quite boring.

Wow! That album was chock full of great songs. I remember when I first
heard Hangar 18. I think that is probably my favorite MD album, but a
close
rival is "Countdown...". I didn't realize anyone liked them besides me
on here. Is Drover ever coming back into the band, or is he out for
good? Chris Broderick was great, but I'm nostalgic.

That must have been a bittersweet situation for him. Knowing that he
had to prove
himself first.
